Nina Nash-Robertson Scholarship

Donation protected
From 1982 to 2017, Dr. Nina Nash-Robertson served as the Director of Choral Activities at Central Michigan University. As a talented and accomplished musician and an inspiring teacher and mentor, she touched the lives of thousands both at CMU and around the world. She was an incredible teacher, friend, sister, wife and mother.

Six months after retiring, and shortly after becoming a grandmother, Nina passed away unexpectedly of a brain aneurysm in January 2018. She is deeply missed but it is our goal that her legacy will continue to live on. After receiving generous donations in her honor following her funeral, we began discussions with Central Michigan University to create an endowed scholarship fund in her name.

Beginning in Spring 2019, The Dr. Nina Nash-Robertson Memorial Scholarship will be awarded annually to a student who exemplifies her enthusiasm and dedication to excellence in choral conducting and performance, and who demonstrates a record of distinguished musical and academic achievement as well as significant promise as a choral educator. Details about the scholarship and how to apply will soon be posted on the CMU School of Music website. Additionally, a Dr. Nina Nash-Robertson Memorial Choral Fund is being created, with the goal of supporting future activities of the choral program at CMU – notably, the tradition of choir tours Nina established during her tenure, allowing hundreds of students an opportunity they may not have otherwise received to travel the world and share their love of music with other cultures.

In her honor, we have pledged to raise $175,000 to initiate the scholarship and choral fund. In recognition of this pledge, CMU will be dedicating in Nina's honor the choir room in which she spent years teaching and inspiring students. The Dr. Nina Nash-Robertson Choir Hall, being officially dedicated on September 24, 2018, will continue to serve as a setting for students to learn, laugh and rejoice in the joy of music – just as Nina would have wanted.

With the generous support of friends, colleagues and alumni following her funeral, as well as a personal family donation, we have already raised more than $108,000, for which we are eternally grateful. As we work towards the goal of fulfilling (or exceeding!) the pledge of $175,000, we would so deeply appreciate your support. The naming of the choir room is simply in honor of our promise to fulfill this pledge. Any donations made will go directly towards the scholarship and fund, and in supporting students whose spirit and enthusiasm for choral music mirror Nina’s. Your gift will fund the education of CMU music students in need of financial assistance, and support the future travel of CMU Choirs both domestically and internationally.

Thank you for your support in keeping our incredible wife and mother’s memory alive. We feel so lucky to have shared in her life and ‘joie de vivre,’ and know that anyone who crossed her path feels the same as well. While future students who will benefit from this scholarship and fund will not be able to meet her personally, we want them to feel the same sense of achievement and excitement she undoubtedly would have instilled in them. Her joyful spirit and passion for music was unstoppable, and was a gift we hope to continue giving to CMU students for many years to come.

With love and appreciation,
John & Jenny
