I like to joke around that Niko would survive a nuclear bomb and come out a little radioactive but relatively unscathed.

Unfortunately, his kidneys had other ideas.

Late Monday night I noticed he was not using the litter box as he normally does, and when he did venture inside. There was nothing coming out.

Tuesday afternoon I rushed to the vet to see what was wrong with my boy, and that’s when the vet examined and took the radiographs to diagnose a blockage in the urethra causing his bladder, kidneys, and colon to be unable to process waste. This can cause death within 24 hours.

Niko was in the care of the veterinary hospital Wednesday-Saturday. Every day around noon, the vet would call and update me on his condition. In the afternoon I would come straight from work to check how my boy was. 24/7 IV’s, catheters, blood work, ketamine, and more.

Thanks to the hard work of the staff at Royal York Animal Hospital and Niko’s resilience. He pulled through with excellent bloodwork, functioning organs, and some hairless patches.

Niko is the best cat anybody could ask for. Since he was 8 weeks old I loved him, and now at 4.5 years I love him even more.
