Hello, I am Nikolozi Erkomaishvili, I am 18 years old, and I am a senior at Public School #35. I am fascinated by electric engineering, especially robotics, and I plan to make a living in it. Furthermore, I have already realized my interests by being a prolific and quite active contributor to robotics and programming events all around Georgia. However, let me commence this humble journey from the get-go.

As a jack of all trades, I found it hard to find my sphere of interests. As an avid lover of books, I would say this lovely phrase from Ulysses suits my spirit in those years: “To strive, to seek, to find and not to yield.” I did everything, beginning from folklore dancing to rock-climbing. Coupled with my being unable to afford formal education outside of school until 9th grade proved quite a hustle (formal education in Georgian schools is very poor, so it is quite normal to get tutored outside; however, my family lacked funds, i.e., I learned English only after 9th grade).

Nevertheless, my parents and I rolled the dice; we paid our last savings for me to learn a programming language called Python at an education center called Mziuri. At first, I was a novice, but as if I had the sixth sense, I started to develop quite a skill with it in a fairly short amount of time. Moreover, I became proficient in it about a fourth of the journey, and I became the best in class. Hence, I took my joyous time with it. After I was awarded a diploma with special graces, I was advised to join the Talent's Factory (the Olympic team’s reserves), and I had to sacrifice my whole summer to attain one of the most complex programming languages.

Like Nicholas Cage in 60 Minutes, I felt a bit discouraged, but a whole lot better motivated because I was to prove my worth to everyone. I excelled in it from the get-go; I learned the language naturally, and it took me a whole summer. During the time I was learning it, it was pleasant to know that by the end of the summer, I would be in the team. I spent a year on the team, and I wanted to use it as a springboard. Unfortunately, even though I did everything in my power in that one year, there was one chain that I dragged from the past that still tailed behind me: it was lost time that poverty made me lose.

Everyone on the team had five to six years of experience; they studied programming at Mziuri since they were in 5th grade. I, as an underdog, did as much as I could and did the impossible, but since I started late, it was pretty much the endgame for me. Now, I had much courage with me. Instead of hating the fact that I was a jack of all trades because I couldn’t find my interests, I understood that I could do everything at as much level as I wanted to contribute my time. Instead of satiating myself with the reserve team, I jumped from one frying pan into another.

Cybersecurity: I joined a free course organized by SCSA (Scientific Cybersecurity Association) and CISCO (Computer Information System Company) at Caucasus University. I was racing against myself, but I learned the basics in a month and even got to write the scientific research for an international cybersecurity journal. After that, I joined a Boot Camp organized by Clevertone and Tech Park, where I learned about Data Science and Machine Learning, and at the end, I presented an Artificial Intelligence made by me.

Despite all my rage for the lost time, the noose around my throat was still there; poverty was slowing me down. To shield myself from it, I took a job as an assistant at an HR company. In addition to that, I took EQ (Emotional Intelligence) and a year course in Psychology to improve my CV. To ensure my future, I started to get cocky and daring, for whoever dares wins, and I began to jump into every hustle I could. I wrote an essay about Tolerance and sent it to a national competition organized by a state university, where I won first place. I also participated in a summer reading challenge organized by the Embassy of the USA, where I won a gold certificate for reading Dune by Frank Herbert.

As Joe Strummer said: “Fate is in your hands. You can make your destiny.” I wanted everything that was within reach of my hands; it was anger against fate, revenge for the past when I was a defenseless kid who had to face rugged clothing, bullying, and constant poverty. Now that I grew and had fate in my hands, I proved to life itself that I had aces up my sleeve. Despite having quite a cocky attitude, I try to stay down to earth. Deep in my heart, I carry immense empathy and understand that my skills should always be realized. I actively participate in volunteering; I made quite an acquaintance with CENN (Caucasus Environmental NGO Network), and my favorite volunteering experience with them was during “Zero Waste Day,” where I shared my passion for recycling with kids from all around Georgia. Since my dearest pet Richard frequents exhibitions and competitions, I decided to join them as a translator numerous times, translating from Georgian to Russian and Georgian to English.

Now, time for the climax of the story. After I left the reserve team, completed cybersecurity research, and finished Boot Camp, my mother found me another interesting trail to blaze: Electronics and Robotics. A local university called Iliauni offered those courses, and I took them, thinking it was another challenge to crush. I fell in love instantly with Robotics. It was love at first sight. Robotics was a mixture of my two favorite sciences, but it was also like an answer to my philosophical principles. First of all, I love physics and computer science, so Robotics was a pretty solid choice for me. Secondly, as a person who considers Simone Weil his hero, this meant a new level of passion. I instantly took Robotics to heart.

I became a prolific contributor to fairs and exhibits. I volunteered almost every month at Fablab Iliauni, most notably at the Women Techmaker’s event, Sportfest 2024, and Open Doors at Iliauni. Since I was there 24/7 and was a de facto team member, they humbly offered me an internship, which I gladly accepted. So, I found my passion, but I lacked one thing: direction. I did not know where I should direct it. Like a true cinematographic moment during my chilling time at home, I saw an ad on EducationUSA Georgia about CCC (Competitive College Club), where they would teach their participants about applying to US universities. I felt the sunshine on my face as if I had chosen one, and like Harry Potter picking his wand at Ollivander’s, I knew my fate.

I started preparing for the SAT and IELTS, simultaneously attending CCC. I lost my hair during the process, but the results were here. As if the journey was done, the CCC program was finished, but there was an even more serious and more concentrated club called CCCC (Competitive College Club Congress). It was an international club focused on applying to US universities. So, I sent my application to universities, following CCCC. In the process, as a quite gregarious person, I became Mr. Worldwide, making friends all around the globe.

Before we reach the falling action part of this story, let me shortly tell you about my academic achievements. I have a solid 4 GPA (we have a different system in Georgia; however, it translates to a 4 GPA), and I am concluding my studies at school with a gold medal. I have been the captain of our school’s volleyball team for three years, a class president, and a science team member, and not so humbly, a de facto leader. I organized several charities and did my best to make my name ring a bell when mentioned.

In the falling action, I received answers from six universities. Here’s my list:

1. State University of New York at Oswego

Electrical and Computer Engineering, with a direct cost of USD 39,601, with two scholarships of $6,000 (Presidential Scholarship annually) and $4,000 (Go Oswego Scholarship annually).

2. The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth

Electrical Engineering, with a direct cost of USD 49,931, with two scholarships of $10,000 (Chancellor's Scholarship annually) and $5,500 (UMassD Global Award annually). Global Excellence Scholarship.

3. State University of New York at Stony Brook

Electrical Engineering, with a direct cost of $61,230, and with a scholarship of $6,000 (Global Excellence Scholarship annually).

4. Drexel University

Electrical Engineering, with a direct cost of $89,298, with a scholarship and a grant of $22,500 (A. J. Drexel Scholarship annually) and $13,220 (Drexel Grant annually). They also offered me an Honors Program in the Pennoni Honors College and STAR Scholars program.

5. Temple University

Electrical & Computer Engineering with a direct cost of $56,196, with a scholarship of $20,000 (Provost Merit Scholarship annually).

6. The State University of New Jersey (New Brunswick)

School of Engineering (School of Degree), with a direct cost of $59,000, and we are still waiting for financial aid/scholarship.

If I were to say which one I’d want to study at the most, it would probably be either Rutgers, Temple University, or UMass Dartmouth. First, Rutgers is a university familiar to me because I heard about it numerous times, first from my distant relatives who loved it, and secondly from The Sopranos. Second, I like Temple University because the administration greatly helps with career building and employment opportunities. Third, I want to study at UMass because they are one of the best National Research Universities.

To summarize my story, it is a bit akin to that of Jay Gatsby; I strive for a better future and the American dream. I am failing to reach it like he did. The lack of funds for me is similar to the lack of Daisy for Gatsby.

მიუხედავად იმისა, რომ პროფესიულად ვმუშაობ ელექტრონულ ინჟინერიაში და მასთან მსგავს სფეროებში, ჩემთვის, როგორც ადამიანისთვის, კიდევ სხვა უამრავი რამ არის მიმზიდველი. ბავშობიდან მაინტერესებს ფილოსოფია და ფსიქოლოგია, დიდი ენთუზიაზმით მაქვს გავლილი სამთვიანი კურსი ემოციურ ინტელექტში და ფსიქოლოგიის საფუძვლების ერთწლიანი პროგრამა „აზროვნების აკადემიაში“, სადაც ჩემდა გასაკვირად, ჩემი ასაკის სხვა არავინ იყო, რადგანაც პროგრამა განკუთვნილი იყო ზრდასრული ადამიანებისთვის, მაგრამ ჩემი მონდომებისა და დიდი ინტერესის გამო გამო, გამონაკლისის სახით დაუშვეს ჩემი იქ სწავლა.

იმისდა მიუხედავად, რომ ჯერ-ჯერობით არასრულწლოვანი ვარ, ჩემი ინტერესებისა და გამოცდილებების სფერო საკმაოდ დიდია. HR კომპანიაში მაქვს გავლილი სტაჟირება, რადგან მინდოდა საკუთარი თავის გამოცდა და ფინანსური დამოუკიდებლობა. ასევე მოხალისედ მაქვს ნამუშევარი ძაღლების გამოფენაზე თარჯიმნად (ინგლისური/რუსული ენები) და ესეც არაჩვეულებრივი შესაძლებლობა იყო ჩემთვის საკუთარი ძალების მოსასინჯად.

თავისუფალ დროს ვცდილობ იდეალისტურ ფილოსოფიას ვუპოვო ადგილი რეალურ მსოფლიოში, სიამოვნებით ვღებულობ მონაწიელობას, ან ვაორგანიზებ ჰუმანიტარიულ ღონისძიებებს, როგორც სკოლაში, ისე სკოლის გარეთ. სკოლაში რამდენჯერმე მოვაწყე საქველმოქმედო კამპანია და სკოლის გარეთაც შეძლებისდაგვარად ვცდილობ მონაწილეობა მივიღო საქველმოქმედო ღონისძიებებში. განსაკუთრებით გამოვყოფდი გარემოსდაცვითი პროფილის არასამთავრობო ორგანიზაცია CENN-თან ჩემს თანამშრომლობას, რომელთანაც ხშირად მივდივარ დასახმარებლად. მოხალისედ ვარ ნამყოფი ნულოვანი ნარჩენების დღეზე ,,Zero waste day’’ სტენდზე, სადაც მთელი დღე ვამუშავებდით სხვადასხვა ტიპის ნარჩენებს და ვმასპინძლობდით სხვადასხვა ასაკის ადამიანებს, მოვუწყვეთ ინტერაქტიური დღე და პრიზებითაც დავაჯილდოვეთ.

ჩემს თავს მივიჩნევ ცოცხალ, ენერგიულ, აქტიურ, კომუნიკაბელურ ადამიანად, რომელსაც სჭირდება, როგორც მუშაობა ასევე, ურთიერთობა ადამიანებთან, ამიტომაც ხშირად ვიღებ მონაწილეობას სხვადასხვა სახის კონკურსებსა და პროგრამებში. ძალიან საინტერესო იყო ჩემთვის ამერიკის საელჩოს მიერ ორგანიზებულ ღონისძიებებზე მოხალისედ მუშაობა, სადაც ქართველ პოტენციურ აბიტურიენტებს ვუხსნიდი აპლიკაციის შევსების წესს. გარდა ამისა, პატივი მერგო გამემარჯვა ამერიკის საელჩოს მიერ დასპონსორებულ ერთწლიან პროგრამაში CCC (Competitive College Club). ამ პროგრამის დასრულების შემდეგ, გავხდი ამ CCC და ასევე, CCCC – Competitive College Club Congress-ის კლუბების წევრი. უკანასკნელში მოხვედრა ჩემთვის განსაკუთრებით ამაღელვებელი იყო, რადგანაც საქართველოდან სულ 2-3 ადამიანს გვერგო პატივი აქ მოვხვედრილიყავით. შევიძინე უამრავი მეგობარი მსოფლიოს სხვადასხვა ქვეყნიდან.

რაც შეეხება ჩემს აკადემიურ მოსწრებას, ვარ წარჩინებული მოსწავლე და ოქროს მედალოსანი. ძალიან მიყვარს ლიტერატურის კითხვა და ესეების წერა, რადგანაც ჩემთვის საკუთარი თავის გამოხატვა არის მნიშვნელოვანი. მონაწილეობა მაქვს მიღებული ტოლერანტობის საერთაშორისო დღესთან დაკავშირებულ ესეების კონკურსში, რომელიც მოაწყო თსუ საბავშვო უნივერსიტეტმა და გავიმარჯვე კიდევაც.

ასევე ვარ სკოლაში ხელბურთის გუნდის კაპიტანი და სამეცნიერო გუნდის ლიდერი. სკოლის გარეთ დავდივარ კარატეზე და საკმაოდ კარგი შედეგებიც მაქვს.

თავისუფალ დროს მოხალისედ ვმუშაობ პროფესორ ზვიად გაბისონიასთან, რომელიც უკვე ჩემი მეგობარიცაა, მის ასისტენტად ლექციებზე ხელოვნური ინტელექტის შესახებ – ეს ცალკე სიამოვნებაა.
