Nikki Smith - Brain Cancer Journey
On August 20th Nikki Smith went to UPH-GRMC emergency room with what she thought to be an excruciating migraine. She has suffered from migraine in the past however, this time her pain was much more significant.
Once there the doctor ordered a CT scan to check for a possible brain aneurysm. Nikki's pain became worse as she played flat to complete the scan. At this time she knew something was not right. What she believes to be roughly 10 minutes later, the doctor the result; a mass on her brain. She was transferred to the University of Iowa to undergo more testing and was diagnosed with a Meningioma (large brain tumor) roughly the size of a golf ball or clementine. At this time it is believed to be benign. She was admitted with a plan to get her pain under control and create a medical plan.
Nikki was released Sunday August 22nd with a medical plan of steroids to try to reduce the size of the tumor, anti-seizure medication, and pain medication. On Monday August 23rd she meets with special Neuro-optometrist due to the location of the tumor and how its affecting her vision. She is expected to undergo surgery in the next 1-2 weeks. Nikki is now off work until she makes a full recovery from surgery. This is expected to take 3-4 months.
For those who do not know Nikki, she is 36 years old and a mother to 6 children. This devastating medical diagnosis will make a huge financial impact on their busy family. Any contribution made is deeply appreciated and will go towards paying for medical expenses, monthly bills, travel to and from appointments, and any financial need the family may need while she is off work. We also ask for prayers, kind thoughts, positive vibes, etc. for Nikki, her husband Brandon & family, and medical team.
Updates on Nikki will be provided by her sister, Natalie, when she receives them.
Much love from the family of Nikki Smith
