To say that my precious sister-in-law, Nicole, has had a crazy health journey in the last few years, is an understatement. On August 1, 2020 while at her daughter’s dance competition 4 hours from home, she was hospitalized for 7 days with a 104.9 temperature and in the ICU. At that time, she did not know it was an allergic reaction, and tested positive for Meningitis. August 23, 2020 she was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis disease. November 13, 2020 she contracted Covid-19 and lost her taste and smell, which has not returned to this day. December 1, 2020 she was again hospitalized for 7 days. Nicole was transported from Tennova to Vanderbilt. She tested positive for Meningitis and later diagnosed with a severe allergy to sulfa. Monitoring of blood work started after this. June 2021-February 2022, Nick and Nicole started fertility treatments. Three egg retrieval’s, which included many medications, injections, and lab work.
On March 17, 2022 Nicole was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome, also known as MDS, a rare blood cancer that causes bone marrow failure, with a TP53 genetic mutation. All of the fertility appointments were ended when she found out this diagnosis.
On April 11, 2022, they met with doctors at MD Anderson Cancer center in Houston, TX. Vanderbilt does not have the clinical trials to fight the TP53 gene mutation that Nicole has and MD Anderson does. She will have to stay in Houston for 37 days and then return every 28 days for 7 days of treatment until she finds a bone marrow match to have a transplant. Her treatment will consist of 7 days of chemo and on the 7th day she will receive the experimental drug. She will have her transplant at Vanderbilt where she will have to stay in an apartment for 3 months with only one caregiver. During that time she will have intensive chemo followed with the transplant. They are still paying for the previous hospitalizations and fertility treatments.
Nicole, Nick, Landon, and McKenzie are so loved by many. I know they appreciate your prayers. Nicole is strong and a fighter.
