Nicole actually agreed to let me do this. Nicole is proud, strong and independent. I decided to do this GoFundMe campaign to help Nicole because she isn’t the type to ask or beg for help. It is important for Nicole to focus all of her energy on getting healthy. I want to relieve some of the stress of balancing how she is going to pay her bills, expenses and medical bills during this time, because while she is lucky that she has health insurance, she is also unlucky because she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She is a Mom to 3 great kids Amaya-15, Avion-13, and Azaria-8 that love and depend on her.
She was at her routine yearly exam and the doctor found a lump in her left breast. She had a mammogram and then an ultrasound. Originally it was only in her left breast and the plan was to have a lumpectomy. However, plans changed, and she had to have a breast MRI done and there were 2 more spots on the left breast along with one on her right breast. Biopsies showed it to be Triple Positive, Stage 1, Grade 3 Invasive Ductal Carcinoma.
Imagine having to decide to have a double mastectomy at the age of 38. She had the surgery on November 8, 2019. Nicole was willing to do anything since it’s HER2+ which is aggressive. Her doctor is recommending chemo followed by a year of antibodies for HER2+. She might also need radiation because the margins are so close. Right breast was full of Ductal Carcinoma in situ (DCIS) which is pre-cancerous and A typical hyperplasia in both breasts.
She is not working due to the mastectomy but now with the recent news of chemo and radiation she could be out of work longer than expected. She will need 6 weeks for recovery in the spring for reconstruction. She is worried about when she could return to work and keeping her insurance.
