Nicolas Lemyre's Stroke Recovery

On August 8, 2019, Nic suffered a stroke while traveling by car with his wife, Stephanie, from Montreal, Quebec, Canada, to his family’s new home in Canmore, Alberta. The stroke occurred as Nic and Steph stopped for lunch in Kapuskasing, Ontario. It took nearly 16 hours to get Nic to a hospital in Toronto that could perform the procedure—endovascular thrombectomy—that would remove the clot in the left side of his brain.
Nic has improved a great deal from his initial state after the stroke. He is gradually recovering, but it is a long process. Nic lost mobility in his right arm and leg, which he is slowly regaining, and he can now walk independently. His speech is more of a challenge. Nic suffers from aphasia (an impairment of language, which in Nic’s case affects the production of speech) and verbal apraxia (difficulty in coordinating mouth and speech movements). For the past four months, Nic has been recovering at the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary in the stroke rehabilitation unit. Rehabilitation specialists have assisted him in physiotherapy, occupational therapy, recreational therapy and speech therapy sessions.
The good news is that Nic was discharged from the Foothills Hospital on December 17 and is able to rejoin his family in Canmore. In mid-January 2020, he will continue several months of rehabilitation for two to three days a week at the Peter Lougheed Centre in Calgary. Apart from this excellent rehabilitation program being covered by the Alberta public health care system, Nic will inevitably require privately funded therapy in the future.
In order for Nic to resume employment as soon as possible, his family needs to consider other privately funded alternatives that will optimise his recovery. For example, it would be ideal for Nic to have access to a new technology called virtual reality (VR) for neurological rehabilitation of stroke survivors. VR, originating from the gaming industry, is an accessible tool for therapeutic engagement with great potential for rehab. Nic will also need private speech therapy for many months to come, as well as adaptations to the family vehicle and home.
The Lemyres are reaching out in hopes that you can help Nic fully recover and to support him in this long journey ahead. Your contribution will assist in covering some of the costs explained above. Nic has already improved so much, going from a near-death state to walking and speaking several words.
