Nick's Story Doesn't Have to End

In September of 2012 an amazing young man of 31 years, Nicholas Alan Schlewitz, was taken home by his Lord after a year-long battle with brain cancer. He graduated with high honors from Altoona High School, Altoona, Wisconsin, in 1999. In December of 2003, he graduated with cum laude honors from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, earning a Bachelor of Engineering degree. Nick’s accomplishments were many, but everyone remembers his everlasting smile, positive attitude, compassion for others, and zest for life.
Nick was a model of integrity, intense values, and caring for others. His caring generosity was pure and knew no boundaries. Once, while working as a sales engineer for Harshaw Trane in Louisville, Kentucky, he rented a small home to a fellow employee with a young family for $400 a month LESS than his own monthly mortgage on the property, and he did it for FOUR YEARS, neither wanting nor expecting anything in return. That is how Nick lived his life. He was a “pay it forward” kind of guy.

Coming from middle class roots, Nick was the epitome of living the American Dream. He worked hard and played hard. He participated in many sports in school, loved to hunt and fish, and lived his life to the fullest. He infected others with his love, caring and values. More than anything, he wanted to have a family and mentor to the children he wished to bring into this world. Unfortunately, his cancer took him before his dream could be fulfilled.
Nick would like nothing more than to help children follow in his footsteps on the path of success and happiness in life. In honor of Nick’s pursuit of sharing and helping others, the family created the Nick Schlewitz Memorial Scholarship in the spring of 2013. Through this non-profit organization, two scholarships are to be awarded each year at Nick’s alma mater, Altoona High School, Altoona, Wisconsin, in the amount of $500 each to a graduating senior boy and girl. Each scholarship is based on academic excellence, participation in a minimum of two sports, and financial need.
