Nick Murphy Rehab

December 13, 2019
My kids, Nick  (15) and Carlee (13) were on their way to the roller skating rink when they were involved in an automobile accident.  They were both passengers in the back seat.

Carlee sustained a small subdural hematoma and a broken arm.  Other than frequent headaches and fatigue she is on the mend.

My son, however, initially suffered a large subdural hematoma resulting in a traumatic brain injury.  They had to remove a piece of his skull to remove the blood clot and pressure.  In the transport between hospitals, his skull was compromised and we had to wait for a 3D model to replace his skull piece.  While waiting for that piece, Nick contracted hydrocephalus.  The skull piece was replaced, but now they needed to do something with the hydrocephalus.  After many CTs the doctors decided to place a shunt on the uninjured side of Nick's head.  The shunt was placed subdurally and was not helping the fluid build up.  In the meantime they had a lumbar drain in his back to relieve some of the fluid build up.  He went in for his fourth surgery to modify the shunt and they moved it to the ventricle in his brain.

He has since become medically stable and getting what little rehab they are offering at the hospital.  We need to get him placed at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital and my insurance continues to deny our request to move him.

I am using all the time I have at work to continue to be paid, but that is depleting quickly.  I will be unpaid going forward to continue to help in Nick's care and do any type of rehab I can while he sits at the hospital waiting.  If any parent has had a child in the hospital knows no one can care for your kids like you can.

The next obstacle, we are looking for a way to move him to Madonna if it needs to be on a self-pay basis due to insurance company refusal.  This is where my pride is being put aside and asking for help.  I know the goal is lofty but the sky is the limit when it comes to my kids and medical care is not inexpensive.

If you can help, please do.  If not, please pass along and say a prayer or send a hopeful thought our way.   Never would I have thought I would be in this position.

Thank you for any consideration.
