Nick Martin's English Channel Swim for the kids

The Portsea Camp is excited to be the charity Nick Martin has chosen to support this year via his English Channel swim and we hope to realise the goal we share to build new a new shower and changeroom facility for children participating in our ocean programs https://www.facebook.com/Nick-Martin-English-Channel-Swim-114367501274762
The Portsea Camp has provided over 75,000 adventure camp places to the children of Melbourne and country Victoria since 1946.
We support children with a range of individual, family and community challenges that prevent them from having the fun and carefree childhoods we would wish for them. The camp receives no government funding to provide camps and outdoor nature based education programs.
The revenue derived from our school camping programs is returned to support our community and charitable work but we do rely on our networks of volunteers, community supporters and donors to help us upgrade and refresh our campgrounds and facilities so children have the best holiday by the sea we can give them.
The camp provides an invaluable service to the children of Victoria – providing lasting memories; forging friendships that last a lifetime building strength and resilience and above all letting children have fun.
Nick Martin will be swimming the English Channel to raise funds for The Portsea Camp and the children who travel from all over Victoria for a supported holiday by the sea. Nick is hoping to be able to help the camp build new warm water showers and changerooms to support the camp's beach programs.
Nick Martin is a committed and active member of the Portsea/Sorrento community and a Life Member of the Portsea Surf life Saving Club A year round bay swimmer with the Weeroona Bay Winter Sharks, Nick regularly tests his endurance and ability to withstand all conditions in the Bay –most mornings – in Weeroona Bay.
Nick has now committed to swim the English Channel and has a slot confirmed for the first week in August 2022.
Nick has been training for around 18 months for the English Channel Swim, which is 34km from Dover to Calais, France. However the tides and weather could extend this to over 60km, taking over 15 hours. Nick will locate himself from around 20 July 2022 in Dover with the Pilot Boat crew and train to acclimatise to local conditions. Based on tide forecasts, he is likely to start the Channel Crossing at around 2am from Dover and swim in the dark for the first 3-4 hours, until sunrise, then during daylight. Next stop – Calais.
During the swim, Nick will be escorted by Viking Princess II, part of the Channel Swimming Association’s fleet. He will stop for around 20 seconds every 30 minutes for energy feeds (typically Staminade, Sustagen, Endura, caffeine-based gels, and flat Coca Cola with added sugar!) which will be provided by the boat’s crew by rope.
