Nick Hoag and Family

Hi, my name is Marcella and I'm fundraising for the Hoag Family, especially Nick.

Like so many of our children, they were looking forard to beginning their college journey. Nick Hoag was planning to start at NAU in Flagstaff this August and instead is fighting Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

He was sick on August 12th after eating out with friends the night before and thought he had food poisoning. When he didn’t improve and stomach pain increased urgent care ruled out appendicitis. When pain continued to increase and medication didn’t help the ER did blood work. He was diagnosed quickly and admitted to the Blood and Marrow Transfusion Unit where he received blood and platelets to replace his dangerously low levels. Exact diagnosis followed a bone marrow biopsy and chemo started immediately.

His treatment includes frequent transfusions of blood and platelets, eight 4-5 day long inpatient chemotherapy treatments over about 6 months, outpatient infusion appointments every other day, additional hospital stays between chemotherapy depending on risk of infection and another 2-3 years of monthly treatments after that.

He expects to make a full recovery and be back on his mountain bike and back on stage playing guitar next Spring.

His college career will be delayed most likely till Fall 2023 and unfortunately he will not be able to attend school in Flagstaff as he needs to be here in Sacramento for ongoing treatment with his medical team. His sister took a term off school and is helping with local applications.

His mom, Wendy, shares updates periodically. Please feel free to share with anyone who should know. They truly appreciate comments and well wishes and share them with Nick. Updates can be found here - CaringBridge

In over 16 years of coordinating local charity events with her women's fitness groups, Wendy never imagined her family would be in need of that same support, yet now they are. And they are astounded by the support the community has responded with already. Blood donations, registration with Be the Match bone marrow registry, meals and so much more.

Unfortunately, the expenses are beginning to add up. Between hours of parking fees, constant trip to the gas station, smoothies - because that is one of the things he can tolerate, and medical bills quickly piling up, they are now in need of any financial support you can offer.

Thank you so much for considering offering your support. Hug your children and loved ones, and enjoy life fully today.

The Hoag Family greatly appreciates any assistance you can offer and thanks those who have done so much already.

Keep Moving Mama
