On June 3rd, 2021 Nick Spalding fell from the roof of their home to the bottom of their driveway while trying to clean their gutters. (Please see picture). The only person at home was their daughter who was in the basement and unfortunately didn’t hear the commotion outside. Nick laid unconscious on their warm driveway for 35 minutes before a neighbor spotted him and called 911. His wife, Sadi, would come home at the same time as the ambulance with no warning as to why they were there.
At the hospital doctors explained that Nick had multiple skull fractures, subarachnoid hemorrhaging, and contusions on his frontal lobe. He remained unconscious for three days, drifting in and out with no memory of it until the fourth day. Finally on that fourth day Nick was awake and lucid. Even now he has no memory of the fall or even those first three days in the hospital. Sadi managed all communication to his family, work, and friends, while also navigating her own household and commitments. Nick stayed in the hospital for a total of 6 days, 3 in the ICU, and escaped miraculously without needing any surgeries. However, he does have a road of recovery ahead of him.
Originally, they had hoped Nick would be able to return to work on 7/15/21. However, that day has come and gone and they still aren’t sure exactly when he’ll be medically cleared to go back to work for the railroad. His medical evaluation is in two weeks, but lingering issues of tinnitus, compromised hearing in his left ear, dizziness and frequent headaches may keep him from being able to return even then.
Unfortunately, the disability checks are proving to not be good enough to cover the families’ home and expenses. This is where they need helps from their friends, families and even acquaintances. They are only asking enough to cover their expenses/lost wages for the next three months to give Nick enough time to recover before heading back to an already dangerous job. Any and all funds will go towards the upkeep of their home, medical expenses, bills, etc.
Nick and Sadi Spalding, and their two children, are some of the most generous people I have ever met. The epitome of giving the shirt off their back to help someone else. They consistently give to their friends, buy entire bar tabs, show up with thoughtful gifts, and would open their home to anyone who needed it. Well, this time it’s our turn to give to them. Whatever you can do would be extremely helpful, and even if you can’t afford to give anything at this time please share this on your social media pages; maybe someone else out there has gone through a similar situation and would be willing to donate.
Also, feel free to leave a message of hope and encouragement as their family navigates their new normal over the next few months.
