Nicholas Odell Kidney Transplant
Donation protected
We are starting this fundraiser for my son Nicholas O'Dell. Nicholas is 28 years old and has stage 5 end stage renal failure.
Nicholas was first diagnosed with kidney failure when he was 6 years old. He was put on peritoneal dialysis for 3 years and received his first kidney transplant when he was 10 years old from a cadaver.
Nicholas has experienced many obstacles along his transplant journey.
In 2001 Nicholas was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa. This is not from kidney failure, but something else that he has had to deal with. Eventually he will lose complete eyesight as the disease progresses.
In 2006 he had to have urethra plastic surgery as a result from a massive kidney stone that resulted in blowing out his urethra. This has lead to major scar tissue that prevents him from being catheterized to help drain his bladder. Because of this, Nicholas will have to have a partial bladder removal surgery so he can receive his kidney transplant as this is vital to have a catheter put in after surgery. Our hope is to find him a kidney donor match in the immediate future.
Today Nicholas is on the cycler 10 hours a day and has to do 2 manual dialysis twice a day as well. He recently had to have a fistula put in because the peritoneal dialysis is not working correctly, so he will be doing home hemo in the immediate future. This will give him time to heal so he can properly be trained to do his hemodialysis from home.
We have talked to MANY doctors and all feel that with all of the issues that Nicholas has experienced, that he has a higher success rate of receiving his 2nd transplant at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota or the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI.
Our goal for Nicholas is to raise money for travel, long term lodging and any other medical expenses that may be needed so Nicholas can receive his transplant and the best medical care that he so desperately needs to save his life. My son has so much more life to live and deserves the chance to feel good again.
Any support you can give would be so appreciated and help Nicholas on his new journey to have happiness.
On behalf of Nicholas and his entire family and friends we thank you so much for any help you may be able to give.
