Nic to MIT
Donation protected
Because I don’t know how far or to whom my GoFundMe will reach, I want you to know a bit about me:
My name is Nicolas Rodriguez from Olathe, Kans., wrapping up my high school education strong with a 5.0 GPA. In March, a huge dream of mine was realized: I was admitted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology—yes, that MIT—where I plan to pursue a degree in Math and Physics.
I was stunned, in awe and disbelief. It was a moment I had dreamed about for four years, but didn’t believe it would ever really happen. To be totally honest, I had already made plans to attend another university. In my mind, I would see my MIT rejection letter, be at peace with it, and move on with college planning. Clearly, things have turned out quite differently. I am proud to say that I have comMITted to being a part of the MIT Class of 2020!
As you can imagine, my parents couldn’t be more proud. Unfortunately, no matter my academic achievements, MIT does not offer any merit-based scholarships. Many people don’t know that tidbit. And so, with the commitment made to MIT, I continue to pursue scholarships while my parents tap into their retirement accounts, savings, and other loan options to invest toward my dream. I feel I must do all I can to help with what will cost more than six figures in four years. This, friends/family/caring strangers, brings me to my GoFundMe account.
Please donate if you’re able, and please, please, please pass this along to others. Every little bit will help. THANK YOU, in advance, for all your help and generosity. I am and will remain forever grateful.
For those caring strangers coming across my account, rest assured knowing that your contributions will be put to good use. Here’s a snapshot of my accomplishments, so far:
- I participated in a FIRST Robotics Team 1710 that competed on an international stage for two years, and was fortunate enough to hold the CEO title this year.
- I introduced Team 1710 to Relay for Life activities where we’ve raised more than $3,000 for cancer research in the past two years. I’m happy to report that the team will continue with this tradition for years to come.
- My teammates and I presented in front of a 200+ audience at the FIRST World Championships about the underrepresentation of women in STEM, and how we’re working to solve it.
- I’ve also stayed involved musically. I played and performed on the piano for the past 10 years, and on the cello for seven. These skills led me to become the principal cellist in Advanced Orchestra.
- Athletics aren’t exactly my specialty, but I did play soccer one year for my high school. So…that was neat.
- In between all these extracurricular activities, I’ve held a few jobs. I was a cashier at a local grocery store for a bit, and am currently interning with Black & Veatch, an international engineering firm. I’ll be working as much as I can this summer.
- I will end the school year as one of the valedictorians of my 400 person class.
- The Topeka Capital-Journal has named me as a member of the 2016 Academic All-State Team.
- I have been chosen by the Department of Education to be one of two KS representatives for the US Presidential Scholars Program.
Again, thank you, from the bottom of my heart.
