Hi, my name is Sandra. Most of you know me as "Nic's Mum," well, when he lived in Melbourne, anyway.
In 2022, Nic was part of a landmark event as Greece made its inaugural appearance at the Rugby League World Cup. Despite some fierce competition from three of the world's toughest rugby nations - France, Samoa, and England, Nic substantiated his selection, obtaining the highest tackle count of any player in the competition. As the world's leading rugby nations gear up for yet another round of competition vying for a place in the RLWC2026, Nic has once again been extended an invitation to represent Greece.
However, this year presented a challenge for Nic as he endured an injury that hindered his ability to gather the necessary funds to travel to Greece independently. Despite this setback, he showed exceptional determination and unwavering commitment to his rehabilitation, keeping his focus firmly fixed on reuniting with the team during this year's qualifiers in Greece. The honour and privilege he experienced while representing Greece in 2022 continue to serve as powerful motivators driving him forward.
Nic's Rugby League journey began in the South East of Melbourne, a locale where the sport is somewhat of a novelty. His career was birthed at the Waverley Panthers under the guidance of Nigel Hargreaves, a passionate Rugby League supporter. Nic's talent and commitment provided him with an incredible opportunity to play out his junior career with the Thunderbolts. After captaining the side and eventually becoming the most capped junior Victorian player, Nic decided the best way to advance his career was to relocate.
In 2020, with the ambition of furthering his career, a 20-year-old Nic moved to Brisbane. During this transition, Leanne and Adrian Smith generously provided a place for him to call home until he found his footing. In 2021 Nic earned a spot with the Ipswich Jets, playing in the Queensland Cup.
Nic envisions a future where his "pursuit of Rugby League will continue to challenge and grow him, without compromising other significant aspects of his life". In reflecting on his 2022 RLWC experience, he recounts feelings of immense gratitude and burgeoning aspiration. Representing his heritage and playing the game on such a grand scale, something many only fantasise about, has only fuelled his desire to push his capabilities and exceed even his own expectations.
Your contributions will offer Nic the freedom to carry on with his mission of representing Greece, investing in his vision and fuelling his passion. Thank you for your kindness and support.
Sandra "Nic's mum"
xx
