Nia's Spelman College Study Abroad Experience

Hi all!

My name is Nia Givan, and I am a first-year Theatre and Performance Major, Psychology Minor at The Illustrious Spelman College! Spelman College has been ranked the #1 HBCU for the past 16 years; I will graduate in 2026! As my first year at Spelman College is finishing, I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to attend this institution and for all the individuals who helped me get here.

Recently, I applied to Spelman’s study abroad program and was granted the opportunity to take part in the study abroad experience at the end of the spring 2023 semester! I am so humbled and thankful to be heading to Barcelona, Spain!

In Barcelona, 20 of my Spelman sisters and I will learn about the city’s history, traditions, practices, their cuisine, and immerse ourselves in Spanish culture. I am very excited about this education-focused travel experience. Traveling the world as early and often as possible is essential as a student and a global citizen. I find it crucial to expand your cultural awareness, see different parts of the world, and appreciate ways of life outside our own.

I am blessed to have made financial provisions with my immediate family’s help, but the trip expenses are still costly. Any amount given will aid my airfare costs, CAPA program fees (this is the company we will be traveling with), and the expenses of traveling to a new country. My goal is $3,500, but any amount given is tremendously appreciated. I leave in mid-May and spend a few weeks in the beautiful country of Spain.

Again, I am so grateful to all who have helped me get this far, and I appreciate any help assisting my study abroad experience in Barcelona, Spain!
