Niamh’s Sign Language journey

Hello, my name is Niamh, and I’m fundraising to begin my Level 2 British Sign Language course this September.

I first discovered my love for signing at 16, when I learned Makaton while volunteering at a day centre for adults with additional needs. At 18, I self-funded and completed my first BSL course, and ever since, I’ve dreamed of continuing on this path towards becoming a qualified BSL interpreter. Unfortunately, between time and finances, I was never able to progress further—though I’ve kept up my practice, using basic signs daily in my role as an SEN teaching assistant. Still, my current skills are limited to Sign Supported English rather than full BSL, the recognised language of the Deaf community.

I’ve always been a shy person, and I’ve struggled with anxiety since my teenage years. To be honest, I still do. BSL courses are an exciting challenge for me—they push me outside my comfort zone in the best way. While demonstrating in class or sitting exams on camera can be extremely daunting, these experiences have been brilliant for building my confidence. When I took my first course at 18, I was terrified, but it showed me that I’m capable of far more than I believed. That’s another reason I want to keep going—because learning BSL isn’t just about a career, it’s also helping me grow as a person. Any support, whether it’s sharing this page, spreading the word, donating, learning some BSL with me, or even just sending encouragement, means so much.

My long-term goal is to work in a Deaf school, which requires at least a Level 3 qualification. This Level 2 course is the essential next step in making that dream a reality. The challenge is that BSL courses remain costly and not easily accessible—this one is £760, payable in four instalments from September through December. I can cover the first payment myself, but I need support to raise the remaining £570, ideally by October 1st.

Every contribution, no matter the size or timing, will help me continue this journey. BSL is not just a skill for me—it’s a passion, a purpose, and the career I hope to dedicate my life to. Thank you so much for supporting me in making this dream possible.
