About two weeks ago, my mom, Mary McWhorter, came down with what she thought was a routine case of the flu. She was up and running after a couple of days, but then things suddenly got much more severe. She started running a dangerously high fever of 106 and I took her to the hospital the next day. My mom went into septic shock due to a bacterial infection that was causing her major organs to shut down. From then, she was in a medically induced coma and was placed on a breathing tube as she was unable to breathe on her own. The doctors were unsure of whether or not she was going to survive and they told me to begin preparing fort he worst. Since then, she has gone through a slew of tests: blood transfusions, a biopsy on her liver, breathing tests, and multiple echocardiograms, just to name a few. Doctors officially diagnosed her with streptococcus constellatus and she is being treated for this. Right now, she is recovering, but is being monitored for some blood clots in her arms. It has been an extremely long two weeks and thankfully, she continues to make small improvements each day.
As many of you know, my mom has always put people first and taken care of others. Now more than ever, we need help taking care of her. As mentioned, she has already been in the hospital for over a week and is expected to remain there for awhile longer. Once she is discharged, it is unclear whether she will be able to come home or be put into a occupational therapy facility. Because of this, she will be unable to return to her job that she has been dedicated to for over 30 years. As her only child, I have taken on the responsibility of getting things done; whether it's the simple things at home or the financial aspects of everyday life. However, with her lengthy stay and with the amount of tests and therapy that are in her near future, we are in need of help in regards to funding the finances that I am now in charge of. Your contributions will help alleviate some of the stress that my mom is currently dealing with and will ensure that she receives the best care in the coming months. I appreciate all of the phone calls, texts, and words of encouragement that you have all given me. There are not enough words to express how thankful I am.
