Hello All!
I am inviting you learn about what I will be doing during the summer of 2015! Please read everything below at your leisure so that you can fully grasp the purpose of my internship and community engagement project! Also, if you choose to donate(any amount helps!) I will send you a personal thank you that will also include some of my art work!
My Story:
In the fall of 2014, I was invited to intern with brothers, Steven and William Ladd, to learn their practice and artistry in New York City, New York. I will be working on their art production team “to gain experience while receiving training in jewelry production, hand and machine sewing, fabric, sculpture creation, and loom work, among other mediums.”
In addition to this internship, I intend on presenting my experience and future knowledge of expertise in community engagement, from the Ladd brothers, through the act of collaboration. I will be creating a relationship between Rockhurst art students and school-aged children in the Kansas City area through an artistic workshop in the fall/spring semesters of the calendar year 2015/2016. I plan to collect recycled materials from various outlets in the area to support a day of upcycling, empowerment, and personal values. This collaboration will be primarily donated items so that the budget of the project is inexpensive and promotes the importance of sustainability.
The Ladd Brothers:
“Spend your life doing what you love, be focused and disciplined, and collaborate.” These values often become very atypical when discerning a career path, especially throughout the decisions of university life. Steven and William Ladd, two brothers and Rockhurst alumni, have designed their lives to fully encompass these values into literal meaning through action and purposeful living. The two brothers work out of their studio in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City, NY as professional generative artists and have been in collaboration for over twelve years. Steven and William have an extensive pallet when approaching an artistic medium that ranges from fashion and design, fine art, craft, performance, and drawing. The brothers intricately create portraits of memories out of uncommon resources including: fabric, twill tape, metal fittings, beads, and belts. Their portraits are conveyed through handmade boxes and intricate beadwork that creates an intuitive abstraction of their childhood experiences while growing up in Saint Louis, MO.
In addition to their artistry, they surpass beyond their disciplined practice to engage in community outreach. Steven and William have spent time in the New York City community working with school-aged children in empowering workshops called “Scrollathons.” During projects like this, a focus will be placed on the act of scrolling. “A “scroll” is a tightly wound strip of fabric secured with a pin (or rubber band).” While exemplifying their value of collaboration, they engage in communities of all ages and social backgrounds to create original works of art. In doing so, they motivate partakers to think about their personal values during the process of art marking. “Through creating a “scroll” participants are introduced to two major themes in their work, collaboration and sustainability. The scrolls are made from found materials, in an effort to demonstrate how these materials, once destined for a landfill, can have new life as a work of art.” Their pursuit of childhood empowerment continues further in particular instances where the brothers have installed collaborations in museums and invite the students with an opportunity to view their works at a professional level. This conscious effort to engage in the lives of others culminates a dialogue that transcends to a renewed conversation of life, empowerment, and values.

Intern Info:
I will be interning 40 hours a week unpaid at the Ladd Brother's studio Monday - Friday from June 2-July 28, 2015.
I will be living at the Fashion Institute of Technology - recent update!
THANK YOU
Being in my third year of school and double majoring in Psychology and Art at Rockhurst University, I have a very busy schedule while also working two jobs as a nanny and student ambassador. After my undergrad, I plan to pursue graduate studies in both fine arts and art therapy. In the future, I am confident that I will work in a community with the elderly, homeless, and inner-city children with art therapy as the leading role. I also have aspirations of teaching collegiately, pursuing a professional practice as an artist, and opening up a creative bakery with my mother. With this internship, it will enable me to receive professional and cultural experience while making uncountable networking opportunities. Thank you so much for your time and consideration to learn about a small part of this big journey and I appreciate your support!
