My Story
You may or may not know that 8 years ago my eldest brother Philip died suddenly and without warning whilst out running - he was only 45. Unknown to him and the rest of our family he had a condition called cardiomyopathy, a condition that if undiagnosed tragically kills many young people every year. As you can imagine the time proceeding this event was very tough for everyone who knew him….I myself struggled to come to terms with it and over time gained a lot of weight. 3 years ago I decided I had to make some changes. I started cycling and it soon became a passionate obsession for me. It changed who I was physically - I lost 50lbs for a start and I decided to become a Triathlete.
Since 2012 I have completed many Tri/Cycling events and 2 Half Ironman triathlons.
This July will be my biggest race challenge yet, The Lake Placid Ironman (2.4 mile swim; 112 mile ride; 26.2 mile run) and prior to that about 5,500 miles of training.
This is the FIRST race I have chosen as a fundraiser and I plan to raise monies for two causes close to our hearts, here in the US and back home in the UK.
The FIRST charity is a UK based organization called CRY (cardiac risk in the young). We are seeing an increasing number of young athletes die unexpectedly.
The SECOND is 'The Billy Zimmermann Foundation'. Billy is the eldest brother of Gabe's best friend. Billy was 19 when he was tragically killed in a car accident on March 7th 2013. Having lost a brother in a traffic accident myself in 1987 I can relate too closely to their pain and loss.
…….The primary purpose of the Billy Zimmermann Foundation is to provide financial support to students in need to attend either of Billy’s two favorite schools, Seton Hall Prep and Villanova University. Scholarships will be given to individuals who embody Billy’s infectious spirit and love for life.
The Foundation will also provide monetary donations in Billy’s memory to worthy causes dedicated to helping children realize their full potential and build their future because the world needs more people like Billy
I am grateful for any support you can give me, to raise as much as I can for 2 wonderful causes
