One year rent for a refugee flat
Donation protected
What is the key to a new life in freedom and security? Let´s start with a private space. I´m subletting my apartment in Berlin-Friedrichshain to a family of refugees from Iraq for one year – while I´m in France for teaching at University and writing. You can help me to pay the rent for hosting them.
The family is a father and his two sons (21, 18), who fled Iraq because of ISIS – the mother is still in Iraq and hopes to follow soon. They had traumatic experiences as one of the sons got captured by ISIS and could only be released for a fee his father had to pay. They arrived in Germany one year ago under most difficult circumstances and have since then been located in several refugee homes, with little personal space for themselves. They have been searching desperately for an own apartment and are actually waiting for the confirmation of their asylum status. The family is learning german right now, one of the boys is an intern in a refugee home.
The flat is full-furnished, with a lot of personal belongings (tons of books in german, english, french, a piano, audio equipment etc.) and is situated in an open-minded, lively alternative quarter of Berlin-East. 55 m², 2 rooms, bath and kitchen, a balcony. It´s a warm, cozy place and I was always was grateful for having it.
If you want to help me co-funding this apartment, each sum will be welcome: 5, 10, 20 Euros, as a one-time donation or on a regular monthly basis. The appartment costs 634 Euros all inclusive for one month (it´s the normal price by my proprietor plus extra charges as for Internet, I don´t charge extra for the furniture or other things, of course). The goal is to have it financed for one year. We hope, that german authorities will help to pay the rent (at least partly) in the future months but we have no covering for the moment.
As a little thank you, if you donate 100 Euros, I`ll send you my next book, which will appear in Germany in November („Mannko – Liebeserklärung an ein Mängelwesen“), signed by me; it´s a rather funny coming-of age story about myself working on becoming a „real“ man.
If the sum raised will exceed the financial need for the apartment, I will re-donate it for refugee causes (e.g. recognized refugee helping associations) or to other projects, which help refugees to find a place. For all questions, don´t hesitate to contact me!
If you want to help in a similar way in Berlin, you can do so for example by either offering a room in your flat (www.fluechtlinge-willkommen.de) or by offering an empty/furnished appartment ([email redacted]).
