Nguyen Dang Saari Memorial Scholarship

Donation protected

I was a student of Nguyen Dang Saari 32 years ago. She was an awesome teacher, a role model and a great person.  After graduating from Florin high School in 1993, I was very fortunate to be a part of her life and family.
If you had the good fortune of meeting and working with her, you would have loved her like I did.

To honor Nguyen's hard work and dedication, Elk Grove Regional Scholarship Foundation will have a scholarship in Nguyen's name: Nguyen Dang Saari Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded to a Florin High School senior, who is an English language learner and is first generation college bound. The first award will be at the end of the spring term in 2022.

The much loved and admired Nguyen Dang. Saari, 68 years old, of Sacramento, California passed away in the early morning on Thursday, April 1, 2021. She is survived by her husband Robert Saari, her daughter Hoang Stein of San Rafael California and her husband Eric, and their children Ari 11, Gabe 9, and Shana 5; and her daughter Nha Kim of Miami Beach, Florida, and brother Trung Dang and wife Hue Nguyen.

Nguyen suffered a stroke on Wednesday, March 17th and remained in a coma until her death. She was hospitalized at Sutter Medical
Center.

Nguyen escaped Vietnam with her daughters and family in December, 1981. After stays in refugee camps in Malaysia and the Philippines, she arrived in the United States in August,1982. Before 1972, as a teenager, Nguyen worked for the Americans at the US Army Depot in Danang, Vietnam.

Shortly after arriving in California, Nguyen sought work waitressing and busing tables and doing anything she could to care for her daughters. Soon thereafter she began working for Elk Grove Unified School District (EGUSD) as a bilingual teaching associate and then as a program support service provider for immigrant and non English speaking students. In this position, Nguyen championed the less fortunate, tirelessly ensuring services to those in need. Before she retired, she was the recipient of EGUSD Employee of the Year. Nguyen retired in June 2012.

To know Nguyen was to experience the love that God provides to us all. The love Nguyen still places in people’s hearts is truly the spirit of life. Nguyen was at her most joyous when she served others - for her, service was a celebration of life and love.

Her daughters Hoang and Nha and her grandchildren Ari, Gabe and Shana were the loves of her life. They will carry that love!

With Nguyen’s passing, the world lost one of its brightest lights, but if we celebrate her life by loving, and being kind to others, and joyously giving, her bright light will keep shining.

Nguyen's beloved husband, Robert Saari has been designated beneficiary for this campaign and will work directly with the
scholarship foundation to make sure 100% of the funds will be added to the scholarship in Nguyen's name.
