Hello! My name is Lukas Boone, and I’m a junior in high school from Springfield, Illinois. My love for music—and especially the French horn—began the moment I first heard the incredible film scores of Jurassic Park, Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark. John Williams has been a huge inspiration to me, and his music is a big part of why I chose the horn.
I began playing during the COVID shutdown, learning remotely with the help of an amazing private instructor. I started on a beginner single horn and quickly advanced to a double horn, which I still use today. Since then, I’ve attended several college summer music camps, including programs at Illinois State University, Illinois Summer Youth Music at the University of Illinois, and the University of Iowa’s Horn Week.
I currently perform in my high school’s marching/pep band, concert band, and jazz band. I also serve as the principal horn for the Illinois Symphony Youth Orchestra and as an alternate for the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra.
Music has truly changed my life. As someone on the autism spectrum and with ADHD, playing the horn has helped me grow socially and emotionally. It gives me a way to express myself and channel my emotions into something meaningful.
Right now, I play a 1959 Conn 6D Double Horn. It has been a wonderful instrument to start on, but after decades of use, it’s beginning to show its age. To continue growing as a musician and prepare for college auditions, I need to upgrade to a professional‑quality instrument.
My goal is to attend college in less than two years and earn a Bachelor of Music in Performance. I hope to play professionally full‑time—whether in an orchestra or a military band—and having the right instrument is essential for competing at that level.
Professional horns are expensive, typically ranging from $6,000 to $25,000. I am hoping to upgrade to a Yamaha 871GD with an Alexander ring, along with a Marcus Bonna backpack case.
