On January 3, 2021, 22 year old Kaailyha Rainey was tragically shot and killed by stray bullets while riding home with her mother in their minivan. Her murder was DC’s first homicide of the year. Kaailyha’s brother Khalil was a student of mine at DayBreak, a nonprofit organization in DC. Kaailyha was a bright and friendly young woman who was working towards a degree in education. She loved her family and aimed to live life to the fullest  

For those who are or have been connected with DayBreak, you know that we were like family. My heart breaks alongside of the others who knew and loved Kaailyha.

Kaailyha’s murder was the third murder within the DayBreak family in the past 12 months. Thus, in both wanting to channel my grief and also support Mrs. Commodore, Kaailyha’s mom, I have organized this GoFundMe in hopes of raising money for the family to replace their van. Given both the damage done to the family’s minivan and the fact that Kaailyha was killed while in it, the van is not able to be driven. It was the family’s only vehicle.
