Hello friends, family, world! My name is Elise and I am here today to advocate for my absolute favorite person, my whole heart, and my biggest champion.
My father is the person that taught me to give the shirt off my back to some one who needs it, because no ones needs come after our own, because pain and trauma are best healed communally. This is a person I have watched support people in every kind of stage of life. He has opened his home to others in recovery, his heart to my friends, and offered unconditional love to anyone that needs it.
He is my best friend, he is the strongest, most resilient person I know. He raised my brother and I alone during our toughest years. He rescued us from the verge of homelessness by working 17 hour days. He helped us confront our own trauma by going to meetings every day and endlessly supporting us in expressing our feelings and engaging in any dialogue we needed. He has been an advocate for so many others through his own sobriety and have bared witness to his heart growing bigger with each interaction he encounters. He has taught me that never in your life is it too late to change, there is never room to stop growing. This man is unparalleled to any person I have ever met, and he is my father. I’m happy to advocate for him like he has done for so many others.
In early September, my father was admitted to the hospital for side pains. A few days later we found out that the pain in his side was from two tumors that were growing on his liver. After tests we learned that those tumors are from the cancer overtaking his liver.
He took a few weeks rest, and then it was back to work at the Shoprite in Flemington. Although I wanted him to rest and focus on his chemotherapy, there was no other option but to work.
I saw my father in a new light that I had never seen before, prioritizing his health above anything else and it made me so proud. He started eating better, prioritizing his doctors appointments, and maintained a positive attitude despite the physical and emotional pains cancer recovery can put through a person. He began getting consistent procedures in which his doctors would apply pin point radiation to his tumors to shrink them. He has gone consistently despite how expensive and arduous this has been for his body.
In October, we lost my mother from an overdose. Again, my father putting himself on pause the prioritize the emotional and financial support for my brother and myself during an incredibly emotional time.
In July, my father was back in the hospital after suffering from a heart attack. He was in the hospital for six days during one of the peaks of COVID-19 and his body became much weaker. He had stents put in and a few days later was released from the hospital. I have been taking care of him since. Thankfully, my senior year of school has been remote thus far.
When my father returned home from the hospital in his weakened state, we agreed that him returning to work was not an option. He has a hard time walking around and lifting anything because of his heart and side. He is still consistently getting chemotherapy and seeing a specialist for his heart.
Unfortunately due to these circumstances, the hospital bills are rolling in, the rent still needs to be paid and groceries still need to be bought. I have been doing my best with helping with my savings, but unfortunately where I am at in my career to become a teacher is not sufficient to support my family quite yet.
Due to the state of the government and the COVID-19 pandemic, he has not received a disability check and has not received a paycheck since late June. We do not know when the next check will come so I turn to ya'll.
This money would first go directly to household costs, rent, electric, food, etc, and then medical treatment.
I am asking for help from family, friends and faces far and wide. Any amount will be so greatly appreciated. COVID has been incredibly challenging for all people so I am more than understanding if right now is just not a time in your life where you can contribute financially, and that is totally fine! Consider just sharing the post!
If you know anything about me, you know that my father is the center of my being, the reason I am everything I am today. Good parts and all. Because of him I am relentlessly hardworking, compassionate, and loving. Because of him I am stubborn as sin, messy and never ask for help when I need it. This is me growing and asking for help. We have been carrying this burden as a family alone since October. I have never done anything like this before, and even as I type it all out it feels surreal. But we are getting to a point where we have no other option, and I just want to make sure my family is safe.
So much love to you all!
