Hi,
My name is Shaun Garey, and alongside my workplace, Hub Packaging, I’m proud to sponsor the Newry Half Marathon in memory of my dad, David Garey.
Dad was a very well‑known face in Bessbrook. He was an avid runner, a people‑person, and the driving force behind the local running group Team Dog. He had a real knack for getting people motivated — encouraging them to get out, get moving, and enjoy running for what it is, no matter their pace or ability.
Like many Armagh men, he was also fiercely proud of his county and a huge supporter of Armagh GAA.
The Newry Half Marathon means a lot to me personally. It was the first running event my dad and I ever did together, so it just feels right that this race is completed in his honour.
After David passed away last year, his family and friends came together to place a wooden bench in his memory. It now sits at one of his favourite spots — the top of Camlough Mountain, with views across the Mournes and down over the south of Ireland. It’s a peaceful place and a perfect reflection of who he was.
Myself and my colleagues will be taking on the run to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK. Cancer affects so many families, and most of us know someone who has been impacted by prostate cancer. By doing this, we hope to help raise awareness and support an incredibly important cause, while also remembering someone who meant so much to us.
Thanks to everyone for the support
