Hi, this campaign is for Sunrise Elementary School - http://sunrise.mdusd.org -, a small special education campus in Concord, CA. The reason we have launched it is that our school is in need of a commercial grade refrigerator in which to keep student lunches and breakfasts.
As a small school we do not have a food service kitchen of our own. Instead, student breakfasts and lunches are delivered daily to our campus, which means that we must store certain items in a refrigerator overnight, or even over the weekends. The fridge we have is old and and on its last legs, and being a home-type model, it cannot cope with being opened as many times as it is. After a day's lunches are pulled out by each class and the next day's breakfasts are put in, the fridge fails to cool back down far enough and fast enough, and too often we end up tossing out items instead of being able to serve them to the children.
The fridge situation also limits our Gardening Club's abilty to keep the eggs from our school chickens and the produce from our school gardens until they can be used, and our Cooking Club's students' ability to store extra ingredients from week to week.
Normally, a new refrigerator is something that would be handled out of a school's budget, or the school's PTA would take care of it, but being a small campus our budget can't absorb the cost of a commercial grade fridge and we are too small to have a PTA. So, we are appealing to the community at large for help in raising the funds.
Our goal is to raise enough to buy a two-door reach-in commercial refrigerator. Most seem to run between $2,200 and $3,200, so we are ball-parking our goal at $2,500.
