New Year's Tragedy: Help Carissa Save her Horses

I am seeking donations so my beautiful daughter can afford the veterinary care needed for her two horses after they were seriously injured on New Year’s Eve. The injuries are the result of some highly inconsiderate people having a party on an adjacent property setting off illegal fireworks right next to the horses’ paddock. The fireworks spooked the horses and caused them to run in terror. They either collided with a fence or each other. Both horses sustained severe nerve damage and paralysis to their front limbs.

While the world welcomed the New Year, my daughter, Carissa, a young 23-year-old dedicated horse lover, was running down into the paddocks to check on her horses, only to find that both had been paralysed from their injuries. She spent New Year’s Eve frantically calling a vet and putting ice packs on her ‘best friends’,

Carissa bred her two beloved horses, her babies, herself. Fleur, a 6-year-old mare, is Carissa's first ever foal which she bred as a 17 school girl. Carissa trained Fleur herself in dressage, achieving Champion at National Titles last year. Santiago is Carissa's most recent foal, bred in 2020. He is a 1-year-old gelding and was going to be Carissa's next little Champion with exceptional bloodlines and what used to be exceptional movement.

Carissa is currently renting on a horse property and is facing the very real possibility of losing both her horses – which is a certainty if she cannot afford the vet care they need – and it's breaking her heart and soul. She is desperately trying to do all she can to save, one if not both, but it will take a lot of daily care, rehabilitation, physiotherapy and veterinary care. She does not have the finances or means to replace her horses, and while it is quite probable neither horse will now ever compete, she is desperate for them to walk and live.

Vets attended on New Year's Eve, New Year's Day, with a follow up 3 days later and weekly. Both horses have to be confined, hand fed and constantly monitored. If the foal goes down and gets stuck, he cannot get up without assistance. The ongoing financial, psychological and emotional cost to a young 23-year-old girl is overwhelming and Carissa is struggling, physically, mentally and emotionally. These two beautiful horses have sustained significant injuries as a result of human negligence.

While it was thoughtless, uncaring strangers that has caused this damage to Carissa's beloved horses, I want her to know there is good in people, that people care, and there are loving strangers in the world that want to help mend what others took away. While financial assistance will help her provide the ongoing care needed, more importantly it will go a long way to healing a young girl's spirit. I am hoping the unconditional love and support from strangers will help heal a young girl's heart and give her the means and strength to carry on. This is going to be a long road of recovery for all concerned.

Let's work together to save Fleur, Santiago and Carissa in the process.
