'New Years Day' Student Short Film

Donation protected
We are a group of film students at the University of Colorado Denver raising funds to shoot our romantic/comedy senior thesis project at the end of November, titled 'New Years Day'.

Story:
When hosting a New Year’s Eve costume party, a people-pleasing young woman has her plans for a perfect party derailed when a charismatic young man shows, uninvited and wearing a matching costume.

Mission Statement:
New Year’s Day tells the story of Izzy, a type-A, high-strung party host who has her night derailed by Peter, a charming man in a matching costume. Taking place over the celebrations of New Year’s Eve, our film follows Izzy as she learns to accept not only herself but a loss of control. This film is a testament to being accepted for all of your faults and loved for all of your quirks.

Director’s Statement:
When writing this script, Katie Ray and I wanted to include all of our favorite tropes from rom-coms of the past. I remember watching How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days religiously as a child, captured by the push and pull, the eventual makeup, and the grand gestures that take place in any rom-com. With a deep love for this genre, I can’t wait to work with actors to bring these characters to life. The relationship between Izzy and Peter is fast-paced, but the two understand each other so quickly through an immediate bond that I can’t wait to work on with the cast.

The Team:
We are so lucky to have an incredibly talented crew, every person hired for their passion for filmmaking and dedication to their craft.

(Director/Co-Writer) Addy is a filmmaker from the Denver area. As a woman in film, she values telling stories featuring tales of femininity and hopes to create films that women everywhere can identify with. Addy is very excited to direct New Year’s Day, bringing the story to life after working on the concept for over a year with her co-writer Katie Ray.

(Producer) Ryan is a filmmaker from New York whose passion for film trends toward stories that tell the story with rich and compelling themes and characters that the everyday person can relate to.

(Director of Photography/Co-Writer) Katie is a filmmaker from Texas and a fourth-year student at CU Denver. With a passion both behind and in front of the camera, she wants to capture the tender, intimate, in-between moments of life that make us human. Katie’s excited to work on New Year’s Day as co-writer and director of photography and can’t wait to see the words come to life.

(Production Designer) Haley is a filmmaker from Denver who has found her passion in the art department. She loves working on female-led films that tell compelling and relatable stories.

Visuals:
We want this film to reflect the warm tones of past and present romantic comedies. We love the look of rom-coms shot on film and will be imitating this look through our camera and lighting. We are so excited about our ideas for production design, with plans of decorating an elaborate party in the same meticulous way our main character, Izzy, would. We are extremely excited about the costumes designed for our cast.
