Hey there all you beautiful people my name is Nina & am in dire need of a new motorized wheelchair.
I was born with a condition called Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 2 or SMA. It is a form of Muscular Dystrophy & it causes my muscles to get progressively weaker as time goes by. Due to my condition I have used a motorized wheelchair as my main mode of transportation since I was 5.
Getting $ for new wheels is never easy, they can sometimes be as expensive as a new car & insurance is ALWAYS tight fisted when it comes time to cover the cost. They decide what features are a necessity & what is extra or luxury; but at the end of the day I’ve always been able to get what I need...until now
This time it has been the hardest I’ve had to fight & the longest I’ve had to wait for a new wheelchair. I’ve gone through countless appts. with doctors, nurses, physical therapists & assistive technology professionals just to QUALIFY & get approval. Now almost a full year later I’ve found out that everything I need on my new wheels has not been covered & I have to pay the balance out of pocket.
I’m now at a loss of what to do; I'm on disability so I barely get enough to cover the bills, an added expense like this will cost more than I get for the entire month!! The chair I have been using the past 10 yrs completely broke down & has since been laid to rest in a medical equipment graveyard somewhere. I was then given a “loner” to use; it’s been months & it is the most uncomfortable, disproportionately sized chair I’ve ever had!! Getting into it recently caused an accident that resulted in a twisted ankle for me & a whole lot of aches for my Mom once she got me up off the floor. So now every day is filled with anxiety & dread anytime I need to get in or out of it.
I have never been the type to tell people my troubles or to ask anyone for $, it’s hard not to feel ashamed or like a charity case. This is different though, so I know I need to swallow my pride & admit I need help.
I truly hope some of you out there can find it in your hearts to donate. Every bit counts & will be more appreciated than you know. You will be helping me get my independence back
