New wheelchair for Ravi
Donation protected
My name is Ravi, I am 29 years old and I was diagnosed with a rare condition, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, at birth. There is no treatment or cure for my condition. It is a muscle wasting condition, which is a life threatening and life-limiting. All of my internal and external organs are now affected. I am now unable to walk, stand or even move any muscles in my body, apart from my fingers now and completely rely on my wheelchair for everything. My muscles and organs degenerate over time and I am now a full-time wheelchair user and require 24-hour care.

I have just come out of a hospital after an extensive period of being an inpatient. I am keen to get back to some normality, also am keen to return to volunteering with charities to help and inspire others with the same condition as me, which I have done for several years now. Sadly, I am now stranded without a customised wheelchair as my current Balder/Etac electric wheelchair which I have had for over 10 years, and has a number of issues, so much so that the wheel actually fell off recently! I have been told it is now beyond repair.
I need a new customised electric wheelchair which allows me to tilt, raise leg rest, and to recline the backrest to enable the chair to readjust in a position to relieve pain and reduce some strain away from my back as I also have Scoliosis. The chair also needs to allow me to adjust my seating position to reduce the pain from my pressure sores. I am usually sat in my wheelchair for about 15 hours a day. I have to be in specific positions as I have a number of other medical issues, including a PEG tube (feeding tube), my heart is only functioning at a rate of less than 50% and my respiratory issues require non invasive ventilation, I also have Gastroenterology issues and I need to use and carry a wide range of medical devices whilst on my chair, such as ventilators, cough assist and suction, nebuliser. Without a customised wheelchair, my daily life has become very difficult, I am confined to my home as I have to be transferred into my bed over 10 times per day as it is very difficult to access my feeding tube or meet my toileting needs.
My wheelchair is my lifeline, it is quite literally my limbs, and I am stranded and left isolated from others without it. My home is not adapted and I live, sleep, eat, wash etc in my family's living room, hence having a wheelchair which would give me the independence I need would provide me with some sense of a quality of life.
I am a social person and want to enjoy the time I have left, with friends and family. I would like to continue to work with charities to help and inspire other people with my condition and help get involved in finding new treatments and possibly finding a cure.
Wheelchairs with a high level of functionality which I need are unfortunately very expensive and I understand that £28000 is a lot of money but I would appreciate any contributions to help me get nearer to a new wheelchair suitable for my needs and allowing me to get some normality of life.
