Hi everyone, I’m launching this campaign to regain something everyone deserves but too many take for granted: my basic freedom, health, and dignity.

I live with muscular dystrophy. Because of my progressive condition, I know my lifespan isn't as long as most people's. I refuse to spend the time I have sitting trapped in my apartment, watching life pass me by.

I am tired of sitting around, rotting between four walls, and relying on other people for every single move I make. It isn't fair, and I want to make the absolute most of the life I have left. Getting out of the house is vital for mental health. I want to experience the simple, everyday joys that most people do without thinking: Being able to make a spontaneous run to the grocery store. Packing a lunch and going out to have a picnic by the water. Getting out into nature and rolling along an accessible trail or park without a massive logistical struggle. Simply deciding to leave the house when I want to, on my own terms.

Right now, living slightly out of town on hilly terrain in Campbell River makes independent travel in a chair impossible without a vehicle. This transportation gap has directly impacted my health, I have been forced to postpone and miss critical medical appointments simply because I had no way to get there. The public infrastructure in Campbell River completely fails people with mobility needs: handyDART is broken: Rides require advance planning days ahead with zero flexibility. When I contacted the Ministry of Transportation directly, their response was simply "first come, first serve" which leaves people completely stranded when capacity is full. Taxis are non-existent: Due to severe driver shortages, accessible cabs rarely exist in town. Even when booked ahead of time, drivers frequently don't show up. Geographic Isolation: Living out of the central core on steep terrain means I cannot simply travel downtown in my chair.

Why $80,000? Wheelchair-accessible vehicles are extremely expensive. Structural modifications, like lowered floors, automated ramp/lift systems, and wheelchair lock-downs—mean pre-owned or modified accessible vans routinely cost $70,000 to $80,000+. Every dollar raised will go directly toward: Purchasing a reliable wheelchair-accessible van (or securing a suitable chassis and completing a full conversion). Essential setup costs, including provincial safety inspections, licensing, and initial insurance coverage.
