New walkway at Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse, NH
Tax deductible
UPDATED June 20, 2023
The 84-foot wooden walkway that enables visitors to walk from the shore to Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse in New Castle, New Hampshire, was last rebuilt by Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouses in 2006. In a severe storm on December 23, 2022, the walkway was destroyed. This came after storm damage in January 2022 that necessitated $3000 in repairs to make the walkway safe for our 2022 tours.
In order to keep providing safe access for visitors and volunteers, the walkway needs to be rebuilt. As it turns out, the Coast Guard (they own the lighthouse and related structures) is rebuilding it, but we don't know when it will happen -- hopefully in time for us to salvage some of the 2023 tour season.
We won't need to pay for the rebuilding of the walkway, but we are losing some or all of our tour season. Because of this, we are losing a great deal of revenue that would go toward the maintenance of the lighthouse. All donations are appreciated.
Since 2001, we have provided tours for more than 20,000 visitors to historic Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse, which is on the site of the first lighthouse (1771) established north of Boston in the American colonies. With your help we will continue to provide fun and educational tours for visitors, local residents, and youth groups.
