Thanks for stopping by.
As many of you may know, I am about to embark on a lifelong dream of becoming a teacher. On April 15th, I received the good news that I was selected to join the Teach For America Corps beginning this fall. Teach For America has a powerful mission. Simply put, TFA is charged with reducing educational inequity across the nation–particularly in underserved communities – with an emphasis on diversity, equality and inclusion - by adding innovative leaders and approaches to existing schools. TFA is the Peace Corps of education.
Asked to choose one of five high-need regions in the US, I picked Eastern North Carolina. I am headed there in early June to begin intensive training and orientation prior to the academic year. My goal is to establish a mindful, compassionate learning environment where emotional intelligence is cultivated as much as critical thinking. I want students to thrive in a highly communicative space where confronting new ideas – not merely historical dates and historical figures – is facilitated, and where the next generation of student citizens are provided with the tools they'll need to reason sharply, feel deeply, and engage with their communities in constructive and healthy ways. I’m beyond excited to have been chosen to teach Middle School Social Studies and Middle School English.
To do this, I am humbly asking for your help.
I need help in transitional healthcare coverage, minor living expenses while at Institute on unpaid training, and assistance with travel, transport and shipping some of my household items to a yet-to-be-secured new apartment. Teach For America has provided a small no-interest loan and a nominal grant to assist in these efforts, but it will be unavailable until mid-June and helps with only a fraction of the anticipated costs. I would have had a much longer runway to save and defray expenses in order to meet these new challenges head-on but I have had about three weeks to make this all happen. It is, as they say, what it is…
Anything you give will help a passionate new educator as well as affect the trajectory of a young life in a real tangible way. Surplus financial contributions will be directed towards additional training and development to help me become an even better mentor for the kids I’ll be fortunate enough to teach.
To share my progress, I have launched a new blog dedicated to this new adventure, found here . I hope to capture the excitement, frustration, successes and challenges of teaching youth with everyone. I know that most of you reading this know me from former a professional and personal life. In addition to sharing that history with me, many of you have helped to make me the person I am today. For that, I am tremendously grateful and eager to begin paying that good fortune forward beginning next month.
