New Scoreboard in honor of Marty Harrington
KEEPING MARTY'S MEMORY ALIVE: A NEW SCOREBOARD FOR ST. MARY'S INSTITUTE [AMSTERDAM, NY]
Marty Harrington, SMI Class of '69 | Bishop Scully Class of '73
When you think of Athletics at St. Mary's Institute, especially Basketball, a few great individuals immediately come to mind-- one of those being Martin "Marty" Harrington. From SMI Gaels CYO Basketball, to four years of JV and Varsity under legendary Bishop Scully coach "Dutch" Howlan, to SMI head coach of local and regional championship teams in the mid-70's, to referee for many years in Howlan Hall-- Marty made a true and lasting impact.

Now as current-day St. Mary's Institute (serving students age 3 through Grade 8) seeks to install two new scoreboards in time for the 2019-2020 Gaels Basketball Season, the Harrington family has stepped forward to lead the way in a fundraising effort to make one of these new scoreboards possible, to be named in Marty's honor. The new scoreboards replace the original Bishop Scully-era scoreboards that are no longer functional.

Marty’s roots at SMI and historic St. Mary's Church extend several generations. His grandparents attended SMI in its early days. His father, John “Jack” Harrington was an SMI graduate, Class of '45, and a lifelong parishioner of the Parish. Additionally, Marty and all nine of his siblings attended and graduated from both St. Mary’s Institute and Bishop Scully High School. Marty also served on the school Custodian Staff of longtime SMI custodian Walt Smith during his college days and helped on many fund-raising activities for the church and school. Marty and Valerie (his wife) were lifelong parishioners of St. Mary’s and raised their four children in the Parish from Baptism through Confirmation.

"We are both humbled and honored to participate in this fundraising effort that will provide a much needed second scoreboard on the very court that bears Marty's beloved Coach’s name... a scoreboard that will now proudly stand alongside the first new scoreboard, installed and dedicated earlier to his dear friend and loyal SMI/BSHS Alum, Joe Riley, who passed away in March of 2019", said Denis Harrington.

St. Mary's Institute invites friends of Marty to join this effort to install a new scoreboard for the school gymnasium in Marty's honor. SMI will officially dedicate the new scoreboard in Marty's honor at its annual Community Partner Breakfast in April 2020.
Your tax-deductible gift is so greatly needed and appreciated!
(Thank you all for helping us surpass our goal! Any money raised above and beyond our scoreboard goal will support the school's financial aid program to help keep tuition affordable for SMI families).
