What does it mean to bear fruit?
I was first baptized at 13, and I became a believer that a risen savior died for me. Like many Christians I became comfortable in my salvation. However, I have to look at myself in the mirror from time to time. Am I bearing fruit, or am I just living this cushy life enjoying my salvation?
So I began to pray, “Lord help me bear fruit.” All I can say is that my savior works in wonderful and interesting ways. What was presented to me were opportunities to bear fruit. What I would like to offer to you today is an opportunity.
I met a young man named Bala. Like many doubting Thomas’s I was skeptical at first. I asked many “qualifying questions.” However, after video calls and discussions after discussions, I began to realize God had brought me EXACTLY what I had prayed for…this was my opportunity to be faithful.
Bala lives in an area where it is rough to be a Christian. Gambia is not a predominately Christian country. We live in a world in the US where we risk being judged because of our faith. However, Bala lives in an area where he risks physical persecution for being a Christian. Yet Bala is a faithful young man running to Christ for the benefit of his salvation and the salvation of others. Right now, Bala and his church are in need.
The rainy season in Gambia is between June and October. The Bibles and other religious documents are in a church without a roof. Bala and his church are racing against the clock to put a roof on the church before the rainy season begins. A roof here in America is much more, but all his church needs for the roof is around $1,500.
So, my ask to you is will you be faithful in this journey with me? Many of you know me and know what a broken person I really am. However, my pastor often says, “God can take a crooked stick to hit a straight lick….” The Bible is full of stories where he took a less-than-perfect person to do his will. Will you help me step up to the plate? No pressure here and no judgment either way. Let us show Bala and his church what it is to be faithful.
