About the Film
New Providence is a film about the nearly one hundred year old tradition of Iowa high school girls six-on-six basketball coming to an end, and what that tradition meant to the people of small towns all across Iowa.
New Providence is the story of Jimmy Voss, a super-star, but often controversial sports magazine writer from New York City, who is sent by the magazine's publisher to a small town in Iowa to cover the final season of six-on-six girls high school basketball. What he encounters there is the final year (1993) of the iconic six-on-six girls basketball tradition, a passion for the sport by the coach, the team, and an undying love for the small town and the girls' game from a community that appears on the outside to be all but dead. But when the reporter allows himself to enter into their world, he discovers that being sent to New Providence, Iowa may have been the best day of his life.I wrote the original story during the last century (1996) and optioned it a few times with the hope that the company who optioned it could get it produced...that didn't happen.
So we have decided to raise the funds ourselves. We're not talking millions of dollars, heck we're not even talking $100,000. Our budget for the film is $60,000.
So, how can we produce this film for $60,000? By partnering with Thor Moreno and Annette Duffy at Fearless Cinema, that's how. First off, they are based in Iowa and are dialed into the Iowa film making community. We will be using homegrown Iowa talent in front of and behind the camera. There are very few locations needed and we have connections in the communities where we will be filming. We're not a big Hollywood studio, so we'll be creative and figure out ways to produce the film.
In March of 2019 we filmed the exterior scenes in New Providence, Winterset and Des Moines. In April we made a few script changes. Now in order to finish the film we need to raise the final $8,500. The remaining filming will take place in this fall, followed by post production allowing for a winter release.
In addition to our crowdfunding effort, are also offering an investment opportunity to those who would like to participate in the film through a more traditional film financing model. To receive investor information please email: [email redacted]
The Background of Six-on-Six Girls Basketball
For decades, a number of states in America used the “six-on-six” model of basketball for girls competition. Initially, the rules were created to soften the physical demands on girls, who had once been thought to have been unable to handle the physical requirements of five-on-five basketball. To that end, the girls game featured six players to a team, three playing offense on one end of the court, and three playing defense on the other end, and they limited the number of times a girl could dribble before either shooting or passing. While the intent may have been to cut down on the physical demands on the girls, the game – especially in Iowa – soon became a hallmark for high scoring, high intensity basketball.
By limiting dribbling and making offensive “specialists” out of certain girls, some of the scoring rose to unprecedented levels, with some players even surpassing 100 points in a single game. The players and coaches of six-on-six soon turned the supposedly lesser game into much more than that. To small town Iowa, the girls game became much more than just a lesser version of the boys game: it became a unique sport all on its own, and small towns celebrated it as uniquely Iowan and uniquely theirs, and they came to love and support their girls in a way which has not been matched since six-on-six was eliminated in the early 1990's.
The Production and Crew
The movie will be produced in New Providence, Iowa, and will be filmed, in part, in the famed “Roundhouse Gym”, a round structure which included the gym and stage upstairs, along with a cafeteria, locker room and classroom downstairs. It has remained unchanged for decades. The production will add to that priceless authenticity by calling upon some of the legends of the game to have cameo and small roles and, more importantly, to teach current players how to play the six-on-six way for the movie. Likewise, the production will seek out some of the best girls players in Iowa today, to make up the teams we'll see on screen.
After the Film is Completed
The film will certainly find a welcoming audience all over Iowa and among states which also played six-on-six girls basketball (from New Jersey to Oklahoma). But more than that, the story line itself, which focuses on the universal themes of unconditional love and loyalty, will hook audiences from across the country. Films which have an inspirational sports theme traditionally do very well (Hoosiers, Rudy, Field of Dreams, Remember the Titans), and many of these also have a nostalgic look back in time, as this film has as well.
Once the film is completed we will embark on a film screening tour throughout Iowa, visiting many of the communities where six-on-six was so beloved. In addition, we will be employing a strategy to secure a national theatrical release. We will also use a well-established aggregator to place New Providence on the following platforms - iTunes, Amazon Prime, HULU, Netflix, and Cable VOD. The Orchard, a leading film and TV distribution company, operating in more than 25 global markets, has expressed interest in distributing the film.
