Hello, my name is Anissa. I'm currently a full-time graduate student, work full time at a domestic violence shelter and am a childhood cancer survivor. At age 12, I was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a rare bone cancer most commonly found in children and young adults. Unfortunately, the chemotherapy I had undergone was not as effective as we thought; this resulted in me receiving a below-the-knee amputation. Since then, I have been learning and adapting to a world that is not disabled-friendly, and I often pride myself on being able to maintain independence as a disabled human. However, to maintain said independence, I must utilize a prosthetic limb, which is how I mainly get around (and can attend concerts, work, take care of my cat etc.).
Now that you are all caught up, here is the current situation. While I am eligible to receive a new prosthetic (for context, I have been using an old leg for the past year as the leg I used for 2-3 years prior finally broke down and is unusable). My insurance covers a portion of the new leg, but I cannot afford the out-of-pocket cost. The leg I am currently using is on borrowed time and is considered unsafe, but I still use it as necessary. The reality of this situation is that when this current leg breaks down (because it will), I will be left with nothing to use to walk and thus cannot continue to work, take care of my cat, or do things that I want to do.
Your donations will go directly to paying for the new leg. If you can donate, please do, and if not, please share.
Thanks.
