49. And leaping.
Today’s my birthday. I’m 49 and standing in the doorway of something brand new.
I just accepted a job in New Orleans, teaching at Livingston Charter Academy—a school full of promise, potential, and the kind of purpose that lights a fire in me. The rhythm of second lines, the wild beauty of magnolia trees, the way the air itself feels like prayer—I’ve always felt like part of me belonged there. Now I’m giving myself the chance to find out.
But big leaps mean big goodbyes.
I’m leaving Connecticut, the only home I’ve ever known. I’m leaving the tight familiarity of Hartford streets, the goods that raised me, and hardest of all… I’m leaving my grandbabies. That’s the part that splits me open if I think too long.
Still, I know this move is necessary. It’s the kind of shift you make when your spirit says go—and for once, you listen.
So this year, I’ll always welcome birthday wishes, sweet messages, and any gifts folks feel moved to give. But what I really hope for is support.
I’ve started a GoFundMe to help with the costs of this move—travel, classroom supplies, clothes for that Louisiana heat, and all the little things that come with beginning again.
If you’ve ever believed in me, learned from me, laughed with me, or loved me—please consider donating or sharing.
This is a big one, y’all. I’m scared. And I’m ready.
New Orleans, Livingston, I’m on my way.
