New Lungs for Andrea



I’d like to share a part of my story with you…

My name is Andrea Zapata, I’m 17 years old, I’m from Venezuela, and I’m living with Cystic Fibrosis (CF); a genetic disease that affects several organs of my body, mainly my lungs, pancreas and liver. There is no cure for CF yet, that’s why I need to complete daily therapies and take numerous medicines to stay healthy. In my case, this medical condition has been extremely severe and I require a double lung transplant.

 My lungs have been infected with the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa since I was one year old and it has since become multi-resistant after a lifetime of treating it with every antibiotic possible. Over the past year my body stopped responding as expected and my pulmonary function continued to decline as this bacteria has continued to thrive. Suffocating, unable to stand or walk for weeks, I was forced to urgently leave my country in an air ambulance and be directly admitted at Jackson Memorial Hospital (JMH) in Miami, Florida because Venezuela did not have the treatments I required.

 A newly approved medicine in the United States along with a custom program at JMH have given me a shallow breath, and a brief hope. My Doctors have now told me I will require a lung transplant to survive. But because I have no health insurance, we cannot move forward with the surgery and I cannot be put on the lung transplant list until I can pay for the procedure up front and can guarantee that I can afford the lifetime supply of medicines I will require afterwards. This surgery, along with all of its related medical expenses, and my latest hospital bills total nearly $1 million dollars.

 I am enormously thankful for my doctors in Venezuela, the medical team at the CF center at the University of Miami, and Jackson Memorial Hospital who have constantly found a way for me to stay as healthy as possible. Their help along with the unconditional support I have received from my family and friends during the hardest moments I’ve had to face, motivate me to strictly carry out my medical treatments and fill me with the energy I need to focus on reaching all of the goals I strive to achieve.

Me gustaría compartir contigo una parte de mi historia…

Me llamo Andrea Zapata, tengo 17 años, soy de Venezuela y vivo con Fibrosis Quística (FQ); una enfermedad genética que afecta varios órganos del cuerpo, principalmente mis pulmones, páncreas e hígado. Actualmente no existe una cura para la FQ, por ello necesito diariamente realizar terapias y tomar muchas medicinas para mantenerme saludable. En mi caso, esta condición médica ha sido extremadamente severa y requiero un trasplante doble pulmonar.

Desde que tengo un año de edad, mis pulmones están infectados con una bacteria llamada Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Después de tratarme durante toda mi vida con todos los antibióticos posibles, ésta se ha vuelto multi-resistente. En el transcurso del último año mi cuerpo ha dejado de responder como se esperaba y mi función pulmonar ha venido disminuyendo cada vez más, mientras la bacteria continúa desarrollándose. Agotada, sin poder caminar o estar de pie durante varias semanas, tuve que salir urgentemente de mi país en una ambulancia aérea para ser admitida directamente en el Jackson Memorial Hospital (JMH) en la ciudad de Miami, Florida ya que en Venezuela no habían los tratamientos que yo necesitaba.

Una medicina recientemente aprobada aquí en Estados Unidos, junto con un plan de tratamiento ajustado para mi en JMH me ha dado un breve respiro y una pequeña esperanza de vida. Mis Doctores ahora me indican que voy a necesitar un trasplante doble pulmonar para sobrevivir, pero debido a que no tengo seguro médico, no puedo ser colocada en la lista de trasplante y dar el siguiente paso para la cirugía hasta que pueda pagar por el procedimiento y garantizar que puedo costear de por vida los insumos médicos posteriores. Esta cirugía junto con todos los gastos médicos relacionados y mi última factura hospitalaria alcanzan cerca de $1 millón de dólares.

Agradezco enormemente a mis doctores en Venezuela, al equipo médico del Centro de Fibrosis Quística de la Universidad de Miami y al Jackson Memorial Hospital, quienes constantemente consiguen la manera de que yo esté lo más saludable posible. Esto sumado al apoyo incondicional que he recibido de mi familia y mis amigos durante los momentos más difíciles que me ha tocado afrontar, es lo que me motiva a cumplir estrictamente con mis tratamientos médicos y me llenan de la energía que necesito para enfocarme en alcanzar todas las metas que deseo lograr.
