New Hip for Fernando

Update on 29 Jan: Great News! Fernando is recovering well and recently visited with a number of friends and donors at PapaHogs Scuba Emporium. Ten rehab sessions completed and twenty to go, but he is already walking so much better and he is pain-free for the first time in a long time. Fernando calls it a miracle. Thank you all!

Fernando Revilla Pina is one of the dearest men many of us know. He has a gigantic heart and is a much beloved waiter at Papa Hogs Dive Shop and Cozumel Coffee. He is an extremely hard worker, working two jobs up to 16 hours a day to support his family for years.
Fernando unfortunately has bad hips. He is in agony and for all that know him, it is absolutely heartbreaking to see him walk and in so much pain.
We seek your donations for his surgery, rehabilitation, and lost wages until he can get (literally) back on his feet. As a leader of a grass roots project to distribute food (pictured above) to one of the most vulnerable jungle neighborhoods in Cozumel, and as a captain of Colonia, he has given so much to his community, especially during the COVID pandemic. This would be a great time to give back to Fernando.
Six years ago the public health of Mexico replaced his right hip. They told him at that time he would also need to have his left hip replaced. For the last two years his left hip has been deteriorating rapidly, and recently the public health system again denied him this desperately needed surgery.
A few months ago, we brought him to be examined in the private hospital in Cozumel, and the x-rays were quite frankly horrifying. Basically, he has severe degeneration of the articular cartilage of the hip and there is no cartilage left; this a bone on bone situation and the hip is very unstable. Surgery is URGENT. We would like to proceed as soon as possible and NEED YOUR HELP.
We truly appreciate your help from the bottom of our hearts. No amount is too small to reach our goal to help Fernando. Please share this need with your friends, it would help us a lot to help Fernando.
For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Anne Nelson from St. Paul, Minnesota, and I have been diving with Papa Hogs several times a year for more than 20 years. During the past year I have seen Fernando (the waiter at Papa Hogs) on a more regular basis and have personally witnessed the rapid deterioration of his hip. After supporting him with therapeutics for the past year, it became clear that he now urgently needs surgery. Donations to this GoFundMe will be transferred directly by me to the CMC Hospital in Cozumel to cover the costs of the surgery and rehabilitation. If donations are in excess of the hospital costs, the funds will be transferred directly to Fernando and his family to cover lost wages and other costs.
