New EHRC guidance: Éadaoín’s Healthcare Requires Crowdfund

I’m Éadaoín, and I’m a researcher, freelance poet, and performer living in Scotland. I’ve decided to take the step to pursue medical care and live as my authentic self.

I’ve been empowered to seek out gender-affirming care because of beautiful friends, because of trans and nonbinary community support, and because of the galvanising reality of queer history, which has always seen us crowdfund and find ways to take care of ourselves and each other. Leslie Feinberg wrote in Stone Butch Blues (1995),

‘This is what courage is. It’s not just living through the nightmare, it’s doing something with it afterward. It’s being brave enough to talk about it to other people. It’s trying to organize to change things.’

I’m in a lucky position where my partner, friends & members of my family are very supportive of me, and I’m incredibly grateful. And it’s clear to myself & everyone around me how much happier and authentic I am since coming out. Now I just need control of my own care.

My brilliant partner has helped me so much with researching the options available and identifying the most accessible and reasonable care. The medical treatment alone is a minimum of £9500 and is only available in England. The aim for this GoFundMe, then, is approximately £11,500, and includes the treatment fees, accommodation and transport to/from England for three separate appointments, the GoFundMe fees, as well as minimal supplies and contingencies.

Any amount is an estimate, so if I raise more than I need, I will donate to other trans people's fundraisers.

Like most people crowdfunding for healthcare, I wish I had another option. I know my community is already so in need. I also have no expectation of people donating so if you could share this widely, that would mean just as much.
