St Athanasius monastery is currently building a new stand-alone church on the grounds of the monastery. The Church will be in the shape of a cross with a curved roof having a dome in the middle.

So far, the site has been excavated, the area has been prepared and the concrete foundation has been laid. The ground floor has been built, the brickwork around it has been done and the outside stone has been placed around the brickwork of the ground floor.

With the construction now at the first-floor level. We hope to complete the brickwork around the first floor, lay the outside stone around the brickwork and complete the curved roof of the church with its central dome.

The next stage after this will be the exterior and interior fittings, which will include the windows, doors and bathrooms. On the list is also the drainage system for the toilets and the sinks. This drainage system will flow into a septic tank which still needs to be built.

A few other major things to mention include the new electric meter, the water meter, the heating system and the solar panels. After the construction of the church is finished, all the electric wiring will need to be done which will include things such as the lights and the electric sockets.

Following the completion of the electric wiring and the lighting system, the ceiling will need to be finished. The work involved in this will be to add the PVA walls, then plaster them, skim & smooth them and finish by painting.

All the pipe work will need to be done to supply water for the bathrooms, water taps and the kitchen, which will be on the ground floor with the water system having its own water meter.

The church will also need to be heated for services in cold weather. The heating system we will install will be an air-source heating system.

There will also be a new road around the church that needs to be built.

The last stage will be preparing the church itself with the standard Coptic layout which includes the icons, alter, alter curtain, the baptism area with its basin and all the other details that make the church.

We are looking to raise £ 1, 170, 000 to complete it and get it running.
