Our farm faces significant challenges due to extreme weather conditions and inadequate infrastructure. With temperatures plummeting to -30 to -40 degrees, the farm relies heavily on gasoline-powered generators, consuming 15 gallons per day to provide essential light and electricity for heat lamps in pig houses. Without proper shelter, pigs suffer from frostbite injuries, necessitating urgent intervention to prevent further harm. Without a proper barn, the situation will only worsen, risking the health and safety of both the animals and the workers.
A new barn equipped with a gas line connection is crucial to ensure a constant source of heat, eliminating the reliance on expensive and unreliable gasoline generators. By transitioning to natural gas, the farm can mitigate the risk of injuries caused by extreme cold and reduce operational costs significantly, including the expense of transporting produce and spent grain during harsh winters due to the available storage. Additionally, the new facility would enable the continuation of providing fresh food and proper care for over 125 animals at the rescue.
Beyond the immediate benefits for the pigs' welfare, investing in a new barn represents our long-term commitment to sustainability and safety. A well-equipped facility not only safeguards the animals' well-being but also ensures the safety of farm workers, who face challenging conditions while tending to the pigs. With a new barn in place, the farm can uphold our mission of rescue and sanctuary while fostering a more stable and sustainable environment for both our animals and their caretakers.
