Hi Everyone! My name is Layla Skramstad and I am a working San Francisco fine artist, and I have created this GoFundMe as a portal for any of my friends and family who would like to help support my new art porject: Painting in VR.
What is VR?
Virtual Reality (VR) is the use of computer technology to create a simulated environment. Unlike traditional user interfaces, VR places the user inside an experience. Instead of viewing a screen in front of them, users are immersed and able to interact with 3D worlds. Meaning, I put on a VR headset, and was able to immerse myself into a piece of art. Hard to believe, but needless to say, I was moved and inspired, and that is why I am writing to you all now.
Why I need your support:
A VR Google made painting program, Tilt Brush, has been released as of April this year. It is astoundingly immersive, which is what my work has been trying to achieve since the beginning. But this new technology is expensive beyond my means. So I am reaching out to friends and family who would like to support my art so that I can create in this new art form. I am hoping to be able to afford the equipment and begin creating in it by the new year.
How your donation will be used:
HTC Vive VR Headset: $800
VR compatible graphics card: $400
VR compatible computer hardware upgrade: $300
Total costs breakdown: $1500
(This is everything required to begin painting in VR)
Why I am inspired to paint in VR:
Recently, I had the luck of volunteering at a unique art show, featuring works of art made in VR. During the show, I was able to demo Tilt Brush, where you can paint anything and everything in virtual reality. I had heard about it beforehand, had become intrigued, and wanted to see if the program could deliver its promise. Stepping into the interface, I can say with conviction, I was able to paint in a way I never had before, and frankly, I fell in love. I was able to fully immerse myself in my own work; something I have been striving to do with my own art since the beginning. I was also able to immerse myself into artwork made by other artists in Tilt Brush.
This form of art style is ground breaking, inspiring, and connecting when you able to experience it. I believe that VR could be the future of art, and though I am by nature a traditionalist, the experience I felt from being able to be fully immersed within someone else's painting was unparalleled to anything I have ever experienced in the art world. I would like to experiment with creating immersive paintings in VR going forward with my art. I will still do traditional painting of course, but the excitement I feel within myself to explore with VR is something I haven't felt since my very first mural. I am coming to you with this with as much transparency as I can, and asking for your support. I want with all my heart to immerse my viewers into my art, and this is a new an unexplored avenue to do it that could lead to successful results.
