My mother was suffering from dementia as well as a myriad of other health issues, she had a surgery at the end of October 2022. The surgery required anesthesia, as a result of the surgery her dementia accelerated from stage 5 to stage 7 in just a few months. She went from functioning in a limited capacity to no longer being able to function at all. She required constant care and became bedridden. When I could no longer handle taking care of her on our own, I asked for help from hospice, it was apparent she wasn't going to get better, the dementia was too advanced. She was talking about seeing deceased loved ones and saying that she was having conversations with them all the time. She would ask me about her sisters and brothers who passed away as if they were still here. It is heartbreaking to care for someone in this condition, when you tell them that a loved one passed, it is like they have to live through the loss again and again. I just began to tell her that they were going to be back soon, and that they just left for a little while. There were times that she forgot who I was, she sometimes called me mom. She eventually lost he appetite, she didn't want to eat solid food and her condition progressed from there.
Luckily my husband and I were with her when she passed. She wasn't alone. I held her hand and told her I loved her and not to worry about anything. I am comforted that she did not have any suffering during her passing, and that I was able to be there with her.
