Nevaeh's adaptive bike

Hi, my name is Jessica. I' m a single parent to the most beautiful, amazing, strong and courageous little girl that I know! Her name is Nevaeh (Heaven backwards). I decided to join gofundme because I am trying to raise money to fund for an adaptive bike for my daughter Nevaeh.

Our story started on May 12th 2008 at 1am when my mother Lucinda rushed me to Home Hospital due to severe bleeding. I found out I was in labor and already 10cm dilated. The doctor checked me and felt a foot. Nevaeh was going to be born at 24 weeks. No time for a C-section and no way of turning her around, so I had to deliver her breached and that’s where the complications started. During delivery, Nevaeh’s head got stuck and she went without oxygen for 7 to 8 minutes. She wasn't breathing when she was born. They performed CPR on her 5x and then she started breathing! Due to the lack of oxygen, Nevaeh had hydrocephalus (water on the brain) and bleeding on the brain, a grade 3/4 and in which a grade 4 is the worst. They didn't give much hope for Nevaeh to live, but she has conquered more than anyone I know. Nevaeh spent a month at Home Hospital before she was air lifted to Riley Children’s hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana.  Nevaeh spent most of her months laying on her back in an incubator hooked up to monitors, tubing and oxygen.  I can remember the first time I had got to touch her with my hand and hold her it was June 27th, 2008, more than a month after she was born. She was so fragile and lifeless, but I knew she would overcome so much! Nevaeh spent 7 months at Riley going through surgery after surgery. She had many ups and downs but was determined to survive.

November 2008 the doctors came to me about giving Nevaeh a tracheostomy (surgical procedure to create an opening through the neck into the trachea) to provide an airway. After many prayers and taking a word of advice from my mom, we decided we didn't want Nevaeh to have that procedure. To make a longer story short. I was working and got a phone call from the doctor stating that Nevaeh's insurance company will no longer pay for Nevaeh’s stay at Riley since we did not have a diagnoses for her and because we would not allow for them to place a tracheostomy. They told me that I needed to quit my job because Nevaeh would need 24/7 care and attention and that I needed to rush up to Riley and take my classes for Nevaeh so she could be released  to come home the following day in January 2009.  That was a happy day but yet a scary time.  Nevaeh was finally diagnosed with Cerebralpalsy in 2009. It was heart breaking but I was happy to finally know what was going on.

Over the last 8 years Nevaeh has went through 13 surgeries, many overnight hospital visits and many tough days. Nevaeh has missed out on a childhood that many kids take for granted.  Nevaeh just recently in 2013 started walking.  It isn't perfect or fast but she is doing it and that's all that matters! Every day is something new, every day is a miracle. As a mother I Thank God every day for her. She has taught me so much! No matter what she is going through, she is always smiling and happy.

I got on gofundme because Nevaeh can't have a bike out of just any department store. Nevaeh has to have an adaptive bike that helps with trunk control and that is designed specifically for her needs. Adaptive bikes are pretty pricey and I can't do it alone.  In therapy they were teaching her on a tricycle but she has out grown it. She loved it and just started to get the steering down. I would love to someday be able to go on bike rides with her but at this time in our life it's not affordable and that’s why I'm looking for outside help.  Bike riding in Nevaeh's life would mean so much physically and it would also be one thing in her life that she could have control over and have so much fun doing for many many more years!!

Thank you for taking the time to read our story it is just a short glance of our life. After we have reached our goal, I promise to share tons of pictures of the new bike that she will have been blessed with by everyone who helped out! :)))

Update: August 2015 Nevaeh was diagnosed with being on the Autism Spectrum. We are hoping to get the care she needs and schooling that will help her strive!
