Hello, my name is Camille and I will be receiving life changing neurosurgery in Barcelona, Spain in February 2026. Over the last year my health has steadily declined due to the unexpected diagnosis of Craniocervical Instability
and AAI . My neurosurgeon will be performing an occiptiocervical fusion which fuses the base of my skull down to at least C2. This procedure is not offered in Canada, and all those suffering with this diagnosis are forced to travel and pay out of pocket without any other option. I am asking for help as my parents and I have had to pay over 95,000CAD in order for me to get this surgery, not including a 3 week stay in Spain before I am cleared to go home, the months I will be unable to work while recovering, and the possibility that I will need to be fused lower down my cervical spine extending my recovery time.
I am a passion filled 35 year old woman that used to work full-time, sometimes pushing 90 hours a week, a woman that loves to travel the world, is a professional photographer, and lives to jump around at concerts with her friends. However, by winter of 2025 I was unable to do any of these things, I have begun walking with a cane, I feel immense nerve pain throughout my face and limbs, spend 80% of my days laying down to calm symptoms, and have faced increasing cognitive decline due to my diagnosis with no hope of improvement outside of this surgery.
While Canada is my home and a place I have trusted my entire life, it is not a country that recognizes or contains neurosurgeons that are able accomplish the complex fusion that is needed to fuse the base of my skull to my neck. Years have been spent trying to have patients suffering from craniocervical instability seen, and still no aid has been given.
