Those of us who know Kate know her as a passionate musician, dedicated political campaigner, animal carer and a staunch friend. We also know that life has not always been easy or kind to her, and that in consequence, she faces some harsh and severe challenges in her health. One of these is PTSD. Kate has endured many of the impacts of this, including worsening incidents of migraines that have led to extended stays in hospital.

Up until now a suitable and effective therapeutic option has not been apparent, but with the support of a new psychiatrist Kate has identified neurofeedback as a preferred and hopeful option. Neurofeedback is a relatively new treatment, developed in part in Australia, but showing promising results across a range of conditions including migraines and PTSD. It works by allowing the person to train the activity of the brain to promote stable and healthy brain states. This offers a chance for people to regain their capacity and agency, things that we know are dear to Kate.

Unfortunately, despite ample evidence supporting the therapy, it is not yet covered by Medicare. Kate has searched out alternatives and found a cost-effective option: buying some of the necessary equipment for use at home, in combination with support from a practitioner knowledgeable in the area. But the cost is still prohibitive as the impacts of the condition have prevented her from working for several years. Hence we have launched this fundraiser.
