Make our neighborhood carbon neutral

Help our neighborhood offset its carbon footprint by donating to a very effective climate charity.  As donations come in, the map of Westover Hills (above) will start to turn green.

Credit your donation to your block (e.g., "5000 King William"), and that block will turn green faster.   You can post your block in a comment below, or you can

Every dollar you donate goes straight to the charity (and not through me), and is tax-deductible.

Details below, but here's the gist:

1.   Donate.
-  Here are some suggested amounts (and what it will theoretically annual offset):
- $18.00 (emissions from you as an individual)
- $42.50 (emissions from your household)
- $95.00 (emissions from two households)
- $137.50 (emissions from three households)
- $720.00 (emissions from your entire block)
-  By default, gofundme asks for a tip - you can change that to $0.

2.   Identify your block.
- After you donate, this website will prompt you to add a comment.
- If you like, add a comment identifying your block (e.g., "5000 block, King William")
- If you do, the donation will be credited to that block
- If you don't, the donation will be credited to whichever block received the most recent donation
- So, if you donate to your block, and the next person who donates doesn't specify a block, your block gets a bonus
-If you have trouble leaving a comment, please  click "contact" under my name, as the organizer, or leave a message on the Facebook group.

3.   Save the world?
-  Well, do your part at least.

Thanks everyone!

At some point, your child (or your grandchild) is inevitably going to ask you this:  what did you do to help stop climate change?

You happen to exist at a pivotal moment in human history.  You're here, and in a position to help, during the sliver of time where we understand the science of climate change and can still avoid the worst impacts.  For better or worse, our generation has an enormous role to play.

What, exactly, are you going to do with that?

You're not going to devote your life to fighting climate change, and that's okay.  We just need people to help.  If enough of us join in and help, we can pressure government, business, and green tech to make the big, systemic changes that will ultimately be needed to solve this problem.

Westover Hills can help by offsetting its annual carbon emissions--and it's surprisingly doable!  We don't all need to buy solar panels and electric cars (although I applaud those who do).  We just need to donate money to the right charity.  If we're smart, it doesn't even have to be a lot.

The idea is called "effective altruism"--using evidence and reason to maximize the good you can do with your time and money.  Several organizations have already applied this idea to climate change.   And two of them--Founders Pledge and Giving Green--have identified one charity in particular as generating the best bang for your buck.

That charity is the Clean Air Task Force.  It has a proven track record of reducing millions of tons of carbon emissions, and, by reducing air pollution, has saved thousands of lives in the process.  Founders Pledge estimates that the Clean Air Task Force can offset an entire ton of carbon emissions for as little as $.10 to $1.  That's insane!

How much do we need to give?  The average American is responsible for 18 tons of carbon emissions per year.  Taking the pessimistic end of the Founders Pledge estimate ($1/ton), you can, in theory, offset your own annual carbon footprint for just $18.  And as there are around 2,000 people in our neighborhood, we can offset the entire neighborhood's footprint for approximately $36,000.

Is this calculation perfect?  No.  But let's not make perfect the enemy of good.  We just need people to act, and your donation will do a lot of good.  Our ship is sinking, and everyone needs to grab a bucket.  This is all hands on deck.

So what do you say to your child or your grandchild, when they ask what you did to stop climate change?  If this fundraiser works, you can at least say that our neighborhood joined together and did something about it.  And if this fundraiser really works, then maybe we can inspire other neighborhoods to do the same.  Let's give it a shot.

Please donate as much as you feel you can.  As more donations come in, the map above will start turning green, one block at a time.  You can help your block turn green faster by crediting your donation there, and your block will go green once we receive $720.  If the person after you doesn't designate a block, your block gets a bonus.  That means, if you're lucky, you can be the domino that racks up bonus donations and pushes your block over the edge.

I love our neighborhood already, but this could make me love it even more.  Thanks in advance for everyone's help!

David
